You all ready for another uh mediocre q. A live stream. You know what i i'm saying we could uh get this started real quick. There we go you just a little bit of apple juice of course right.

Only apple juice. Especially. If you're not old enough right. So uh put your feet up and just get ready for the mediocrity to amaze you okay.

So let's cue up the intro music and uh we'll talk to you here in just a minute foreign foreign foreign. Thank you foreign so if you all didn't know it like i have an obsession with the 80s movies and especially beverly hills cop. I loved beverly hills cop. And it wasn't even the movie that i loved as a young kid.

I just loved the music right there's something about the music. I've always been driven by music. I like all kinds of music. I can still remember like being in the car.

With my mom. My biological mom. When she played for me cathedral by crosby stills and nash. Now that's the corniest song in the world.

But there was something about that song as a kid that just hit me right and music does that to me it gives me the the i call him the douche chills like you get these chills. When i hear certain songs they remind me of moments in my past. They may not be the best music. But there's certain songs and 80s like synth music.

Does something for me so that's why i use the 80s stuff like as the brazing montages and different things in my videos. So it's kind of cool. So whoa that was awkward yeah. Very unprofessional of me to like smack.

The mic with my hand and stuff right so hello to everybody uh hvac. 24. Says do any of my employees. Watch my channel or my live streams um.

I would say that occasionally my guys watch my live streams. But i'm not gonna say that they watch them all the time. So you know. It's kind of weird like um.

Let me know in the chat is my audio coming through okay. For some reason. I think the noise gate might be on on this guy right here because i'm hearing something in my ears. But does it sound normal to you guys i got a new mixer.

So i'm still kind of getting used to this thing so um. What is up how's it going um. I'm looking through the chat right now. I know it's been a while since i've gone live.

There's been a lot that i've missed for sure. Um 80s music and bmx. Yeah. I was never really big into bmx.

But i wanted to be it was one of those things that we couldn't afford to get me a bmx bike. But i always wanted one i bought the cheapest walmart bike and definitely pushed my handlebars forward for sure so oh audio's good right on cool right on uh. Yeah. It's been a while for sure and i'm glad to be back.

I didn't know if i was even gonna be here today just because of how chaotic everything has been this last weekend. Oh my gosh. I was working my butt off it has just been nuts lately and you know in all fairness. A lot of my customers.

They don't do preventative maintenance. So it's starting to really. It's like someone's just twisting. A knife in my stomach every time i get another call and it's like for real.
I had to stop eating dinner for this but again i know i need to be thankful right. I am thankful that i have the work. I'm thankful that they choose to call me. It's frustrating that a lot of them don't do preventative maintenances.

But i do have some customers that do them i'm certainly prioritizing customers right now uh this last weekend uh. I got an emergency service call for a walk in cooler and i went out there and they were like did you get my ac service calls because we have leaking water in the dining room and i was like yeah. That's not my priority right now and they're like but it's inconvenient. I'm like yeah.

It is i'm sure. But it's not my problem. I said i'll get to it when i get to it i don't mean to be rude. But they don't do maintenances so it's like i'm putting normal contract customers before them because i i can't bend over backwards for someone who doesn't maintain their equipment.

But then expects me to drop everything to go fix. It yeah. I'm gonna get there. But i'm not you know rushing out there there's a lot of variables that go into it.

But business. Ownership is definitely a fun thing so hello to everybody and welcome to the hvsdr videos live stream. Like i said. It has been a very long time uh.

If you don't already know me my name is chris. I'm. An hvac service technician. Business.

Owner. Um content creator a little bit of everything. And father first and foremost right father and husband uh recently. I took it's been a while since i've done these live streams and i also haven't been uploading very much in the last week.

Because i've been super busy at work and then on top of that it was my daughter's 16th birthday. So had to spend some time with my daughter do the family thing and it was awesome. We had a great birthday. I kind of went live on instagram and talked about it a little bit before too.

But you know it's interesting. Because uh you can get caught in this rut. Where you think like hey you know what i didn't get that when i was 16. So why am i gonna do that when when they're 16.

You know. But it's like hey times are a little bit different right so uh. My daughter's not driving yet she's learning how to drive so she didn't get a car for her birthday. But i think we got off a little bit easy because i didn't have to buy a car right cars are very expensive right now.

It's kind of crazy. So um let me see uh jason johnson. Saying hold him is an awesome supervisor. So jason johnson actually went to work for holden shamburger.

Who hvac time if you guys don't already watch holden's channel holden is an awesome heavy commercial uh technician. Who does a lot of chiller work and heavy commercial slash industrial work so uh. It's a great youtube channel. You definitely want to go check it out holden does a great job one of these days.
I would like to start incorporating interviews into my channel. I've got all kinds of ideas for the future so one of these days. We'll definitely do that maybe we'll get holding on the hvac overtime youtube channel. Too if you guys don't already know i do a live stream with my friends adam joe and bill on the hvac overtime youtube channel.

We do it on friday evenings about 605 pm pacific. But i do have to say if you watch my channel and you appreciate my channel for the technical content and the no bs and the straightforward stuff you're gonna be in for a rude awakening. If you're gonna expect that over at the heac overtime youtube channel. The hvac overtime youtube channel is a very very very uncensored show that we do on friday evenings uh.

I think a lot of people that watch my content and have no idea about the overtime youtube channel might be a little bit surprised if they came over there but you get a little bit more of the uncensored version of me for sure and my friends of course. So uh you definitely want to check that out usually i'm there on on friday evenings about 605 pm pacific work permitting. I wasn't there last week just like i wasn't doing live streams all last week. And it's just definitely been kind of hectic so hello to everybody all right let's see uh ligam gamer.

Says he's 11 years old and he loves my videos that's awesome. But i really do appreciate the fact that you watch my videos and i hope that my videos spark an interest in you whether it be technically minded. Even if you don't get into hvacr maybe. It just sparks a mechanical interest in you and you get into some kind of a trade or it just introduces the way that i think into yourself.

And you apply it somewhere else in your life. So i'm glad because i actually do have a lot of young kids that watch my videos uh some actually even younger than you and you said you're 11. I had a family reach out to me where they had a very very young child i want to say like four years old that somehow stumbled on my videos and the parents reached out to me and they were like yeah i don't know how my kid found your channel. But he started watching these videos and he knows your voice and like it was a very very humbling and a very cool feeling to to have them reach out to me and of course.

I hooked that little kid up with a bunch of merch and stuff so if you guys don't already know i do have some merchandise available on my website hvacrvideoscom. So please check. It out uh. The hats.

Beanies sweaters all that good stuff um yeah. So check it out what i do have to say. Too you guys make me laugh. Because i underestimated you my viewers in the amount of hats.

That you guys were gonna purchase from my website. So i i briefly ran out and i made an announcement like a couple weeks ago that i got new hats in stock and ever since then you guys have been killing it right. And i actually have to say i want to say that i because i usually buy hats like i don't know 100 of each size at a time. So i buy a hundred large extra large 100 small mediums right.
And you guys have just been depleting my stock to the point that i actually realized i've only got like 20 something hats left of the large extra large um. So it's already too late for me to warn you to say slow down on the purchasing because there's no way i'm gonna i'm gonna run out again. I'm gonna have to put in an order. I was just thinking about it last night.

I'm gonna have to put in an order. But it's going to take a couple weeks to get the hats and there's no way at the rate. Y'all are buying them so thank you so very much i do appreciate it but i was just kind of like dumbfounded so um you know i never planned on doing merchandise. It was just never really something that i wanted to like do but enough of you reached out to me.

And asked me that i decided to start doing it and uh. I'm a little intricate and weird in the way that i do things so i was like very particular and i spent a bunch of money getting samples. And that's the other thing too as a content creator you know you're like hey. I reach out to a manufacturer.

And they're like oh yeah. We can get you samples you know in my head samples are free no samples cost more than the production runs like samples are expensive and i spent a stupid amount of money on samples changing the design tweaking. The design until i finally came out with the hat that i wanted and the shirts and all that good stuff so anyways. I do have to say thank you to you.

All but if you're interested check out my website hvacrvideoscom. Okay so as usual. I got a couple things i want to cover and a couple things that i want to talk about and then if you guys have questions throw them into the chat and put them in caps lock. Okay.

If you put the questions in caps lock. It helps me to see the questions. A little bit better now oftentimes like right now. The chat is rolling through and it's hard for me to keep up with the chat.

Okay so if i miss your question feel free to send it to me to hvacrvideos gmailcom. Okay or just keep reposting your question and then that way i can get to it all right all right um. Let me. See what i'm missing.

In here. Uh. Oh. That is funny.

Kenneth. Kenneth landis. Says that his one year old cheers and claps when i start brazing that is too funny um all right i'm going down through the chat uh matt romig did i see your last message no i did not uh put it in caps lock. I'll try to pay attention for it.

But and if i miss it feel free to send a uh um email to me hvacarevideos gmailcom. Okay. Where's the stickers joe t. They're sitting right here.
But i got a big stack of them again it's just one of those things that's hard for me to prioritize my time and stickers on my website. Even though i paid a lot of money and i have a big old stack of them it's just hard for me to get them put up on my website. It's just one of those things so um uh eduardo thank you that's very humbling uh awesome. But i really appreciate you okay all right so um.

I've been absent right. I already kind of talked about it a little bit. It's been kind of crazy. Busy at work been trying to keep up with everything trying to pay attention to the family had my daughter's 16th birthday.

But got all kinds of cool ideas and things coming up working on a project with heatcraft refrigeration that'll be coming up. I'll actually be going out to uh their corporate office in georgia here in a couple weeks maybe a month or something like that they're gonna fly me out there and we're gonna do some filming and interviews so it'll be some cool content to come out on the channel. Soon. I do want to kind of talk about a few things so i was reading through the comments today before the stream and i was just kind of reading through things and uh you know i appreciated someone's comment and i wanted to kind of reiterate it okay.

And i think they were kind of addressing something that i said in my recent video and i'll talk about a few different things right now. But you know when it comes to partners uh manufacturers. Uh. You know affiliate sponsors different things like that people that want to work with me on my channel.

I am very particular and i would consider myself very difficult to work with okay. I want you guys to know that i don't just push and pedal anything that manufacturers sent me. If i did you guys would it would be insane. Because the emails and stuff that i get from random people.

And it's like this has nothing to do with my channel and no i am not going to try your brand new product uh that you know you haven't even released on the market. Yet and you want me to put it on my home air conditioner like no that's not happening okay. I'm very particular. I typically only work with the manufacturers that i already use uh key in point when you think about sporlin when you think about field piece.

Now. Sporland is a sponsor of my channel fieldpiece. I do peace work with them every once in a while where they want me to help promote a product or something like that um. But you know i'm very particular in the things that i do even with field piece.

I love a lot of their products. But you know they want me to promote a certain product and i haven't used it yet. I'm not going to commit to promoting it until i get it in my hands. And i use it for a few weeks and then i decide that i want to make a video about it okay so i hope that you guys get that that it comes across that i'm not trying to push every single product.
Nothing against other influence sensors and content creators that do that kind of stuff. That's their own thing. I'm not judging them for doing that it's just not my style. Okay.

I'm not going to be pushing all kinds of weird additives that you add to the system. This channel is not just about making money to me it never has and i don't want it to ever be okay. I'm not gonna lie and say that i don't make money because i do but i like to have fun with it and i like it to be my channel. So i hope that comes across in the things that i talk about in the tools that i use okay oftentimes.

I'll have manufacturers you know reach out to me. And say hey we want you what they want to send me a script and they want me to say and it's like no i don't do that i don't i don't rehearse. I don't script. I don't do any of that stuff.

It's just if you want me to work with your products send it to me if i like it i might include it in a video. I might not it just depends. There was a tool manufacturer of a particular leak detector. Many years ago and they reached out to me and they wanted me to promote their product and i said well you got to send me your product and i'll use it for give me about a month or two and i'll decide whether or not i want to make a video about it and i actually ended up sending them the product back.

I said no offense. It's just not something that works for me. And i'd rather not make a video talking negative about your products. So i'm just going to send it back to you okay so you know i hope that comes across and i hope that you guys get that all right um let me see uh what was the guy you mentioned on youtube was it holden um.

What was the guy matt arnold. I mentioned a few minutes ago holden shamburger from hvac time. If that's who you're thinking of uh. I don't know if that's the question you're asking um let me see what am i missing in here.

Am. I still hiring bobby williams. So i have not hired anybody as of yet. I'm very slow at my hiring process.

We're still kind of making our way through the summer. So if you're interested in sending me a resume feel free to i'm not going to commit to hiring anybody at the. Moment but you can send a resume to hvacrvideos gmailcom. So one refrigeration part that i always have to have in my van uh i have sporland powerheads and sporland dryers.

I have a txv kit from sportland that's one of my favorite tools to have where i can build almost any txv in the field that i need those are very good ones let me. See what else we got going on. Yeah. That's funny um you go to the website.

And don't. See stickers. So. You'll just blame joe at hvacr north.

Yeah. Joe t. That's actually yeah just go ahead and blame joe because uh. Joe hvac north it's his fault that i don't have stickers on my website.

Yet. It's always joe so uh the next time i change an evaporator in a walk in cooler can you please save you one of the fan guards you need it for a reach in refrigerator. That's funny matt uh. We'll see what we can do send me an email about hvac our videos at gmailcom.
Okay um. Let me see what we got going on here uh. You hate creators that let companies walk on top of that window. So yeah.

You know and again nothing against those creators. Okay really nothing against them that's their style. It's just not my style. I'm not judging i have a lot of friends that promote all kinds of products and i'm not judging them at all it's just not my style a channel.

So something i want to talk about um. Is i mentioned it in the last couple videos and and i kind of want to talk about it because i want feedback. And i want ideas so i decided that i i've been thinking about this for a long time. But i decided that i'm going to go forward.

And i announced that i am going to be replacing the air conditioning system in my house. And i want to have fun with this okay. I want to go crazy okay. I want to do something really neat now um.

When i say crazy. I don't necessarily mean the most expensive equipment out there because you know i don't know i mean i don't really have a budget per se because a lot of people reached out to me with ideas saying set your budget and then work from there you gotta understand too though like i understand as a sales process right if salesmen out there they're saying yeah. What's your budget and then you work backwards from that that's not how i'm working. Because i don't really have a budget per se okay.

I'm not saying that i'm gonna go spend a hundred thousand dollars on it but i'm just gonna basically evaluate what i need and then decide where i want to go i'm open to having partner sponsors that kind of stuff. But also the reason. Why i think the person had brought it up earlier and i addressed it those sponsors and those partners that potentially want to work with me they have to understand that i do things the way that i want to do them so for instance. When when someone reaches out to me.

And says hey i want you to use my tools and your videos. And i want you and they want to send me a script. I say that's not how it works i say you send me your tools. If i like it i may give you the opportunity to be in one of my videos.

But i'm not going to make a dedicated tool review video. Because that's not what i do that's not how i had another channel that i was really trying to do that on but really haven't had time to pay attention to that so if i was to work with the manufacturer. I'm not going to promise that an entire video would be about their product. It's just not like that uh if if someone wanted to work with me and they were going to send me something maybe i might use it in a video you know who knows.

But i want to go kind of crazy. So i have my buddy adam muffin. A team adam from the hvac overtime youtube channel. Um.
He's helping me right now. We're working on doing a load calculation on my house. Then what we're going to do is i'm going to reach out to my friends over at truetech tools. And i'm going to see if they can hook me up with some high end thermal imaging cameras.

I want to use like very very high end ones if they can't help me out then i'll you know i'll find someone. But i want to get my hands on some really high end. Thermal imaging cameras. And i want to do some cost comparisons and figure out.

Where the best bang for my buck would come from is it better to upgrade the envelope of my house and potentially reduce the capacity of the system that i need i want to see a cost comparison. So that's the kind of stuff that i want to film. But at the same time i don't want it to be boring. And i want to turn this into a series.

I want this to be hey ideas. I'm not promising. This is how this is going to work. But an idea that i have is i want to do a load calculation right and i want to show how we figure out the load.

I want to make envelope upgrades. I want to fix insulation. I want to change windows do different things like that or maybe not necessarily windows. But there might be a few windows that i have to change and i want to see how that reduces might load and find a cost comparison right and then i want to decide on a system.

Do i want to go mini splits in every room do i want to go full communicating variable capacity do i want to go vrv like i don't know i haven't decided yet so i want to find out where i want to go my little. Buddy luke just walked in here right now. What's up buddy. You want to say.

Hi to everybody. Come. Here. Come.

Here. Oh hi. Hi. Yeah.

You want to say. Hi. Say. Hi.

This. Is. My. Buddy luke.

Oh. Well no i think you just licked your balls. And now you licked my face thank you yeah dogs they like to lick everything and then lick your face. But that's my buddy luke.

He's getting so big so he is a silver labrador retriever. So all right let's see um. So yeah. I want to have fun with this process.

So if you guys have ideas feel free to send me an email hvacrvideos gmailcom. I want to show the process of pulling permits. I want to do this whole thing show you how crazy it is to pull a permit in california of course. I'm limited on the things that i can film.

But i want to figure out a creative way to show it all so am. I doing a blower door test for sure. Joe t. That is a critical part of my energy.

Envelope audit is going to be blower door tests before and after to show improvements to my envelope and how we fix things i want to do duck blaster tests. All that stuff so i will definitely be reaching out to my partners over at truetech tools to see if they can help me out with that stuff and i've had people reach out to me uh manufacturers of blower doors already that want to help so. This is going to be awesome. So um.
Let me see what else we got going on here. What is the advantage of a high end infrared versus mid grade um. I don't know what you mean there renaissance builder are you talking about a thermal imaging camera. Or are you talking about a leak detector as far as infrared.

I'm i'm assuming you're talking about a thermal imaging camera. But i'm curious um give me some context uh throw. It in caps. Lock.

Okay. Whole. House. Hvacr.

Chiller with three phase. Compressor pumps glycol loop. Cooling for the house and a walk in cooler and freezer. And manual.

Well we have to be practical too that does sound fun. But um. I'm sure that the code compliance officer is not going to even know what he's looking at if i did that i also had some people reach out to me and say do a ground source uh uh heat pump system and i don't know that i can actually get that approved per code in my area plus the ground temperature here is ridiculously hot i'd have to go down so deep to get an a d heat transfer temperature differential because uh you know when it's 105 degrees outside my ground temperature is pretty hot even 18 inches down so we'd have to go super super deep and don't know if i can get that approved so let's see what else we got going on in the chat. What's my favorite way to leak check units.

My favorite way to leak check units is to i mean it really depends i i treat every leak search different depending on the situation. So shut off all the fans shut off all the equipment make sure the pressures are equalized in the system or pressurized with nitrogen. If need be with the trace gas in it. And then use an electronic leak detector.

That's the ideal way to do it i'm assuming someone had said in the chat right now that uh they were talking about the guy's question about the high end versus mid grade thermal imaging camera. And then jason johnson said resolution yeah. I would think so if that's that that's what you were asking. Yeah.

I would say it would be the resolution or the accuracy with going with a high end camera. So i want to be able to see my walls. And see where there's insulation deficiencies and figure out where best to put my money when it comes to upgrading my house. I feel like too many people out there focus on the system.

And not necessarily. The envelope of the home right. Consider your house a an envelope right and everything is inside of it. So you need to focus on the house.

Before you just throw a system at it right because a system is going to cool a space down. But if you have infiltration you're still going to have potentially high humidity issues or other infiltration issues that can affect the comfort level of your home. So you can keep throwing bigger and bigger systems at it. When your comfort level doesn't get any better versus.
If you upgrade the envelope fix some some insulation deficiencies fix some leaky windows different things like that and you could potentially make yourself feel more comfortable and or be able to put a smaller system in that will be able to cool your house even better than it did before right with the bigger system so it really depends on each particular situation too but yeah high end thermal imaging camera. I think would be a must with inspecting the home for sure so let's see what else we got going on here. What is the advantage of a high oh okay there you go uh renaissance builder. Okay so yeah we kind of answered that question so yeah.

It's just going to be the accuracy of it the resolution. Um for sure so did i check out hack free hvac on youtube. Yeah. I watch hack free hvac.

He has a great channel um. He does all kinds of cool stuff. And he definitely is a super smart dude. I like his uh his his system that he's been kind of building himself.

He's a much smarter person than i and he gets in there and starts programming and building his own stuff. It's really awesome so definitely go check out hack free hvac on youtube for sure. Let's see what else we got going on here um. All right um.

I am going to uh. Oh. Let me answer this question unacceptable. Says he loves an ultrasonic leak detector.

But you're going from light commercial light refrigeration to supermarket refrigeration you feel like you're not going to be able to use your ultrasonic. Anymore. Um. You know every leak detector has a place to be used sometimes certain ones.

Now i haven't had very good luck with ultrasonic leak detectors in fact spoiler. The manufacturer that sent me a tool a long time ago was an ultrasonic leak detector. And i actually tried it out for about a month. And then i just reached out and sent it back because it just doesn't work for me.

But my buddy rick over at hvacr survival. Loves his ultrasonic now rick also says that you know he'll use um. The uh d. Tec.

Stratus. On some things he'll use the the ultrasonic on some things it really depends so it just depends on the environment. You're in like one time. I was trying to use an ultrasonic and there was fluorescent lights in the room and all i could hear was the fluorescent lights surprisingly those make a lot of noise.

So that's all i could hear so it's like dude. I can't hear anything. But the fluorescent lights this ultrasonic didn't do good for me. So it really depends on the environment.

You're working in for sure. Let's see what else we got going on in the chat variable speed. Multiple zones and multiple returns controllable attic. Fans.

Dale. Those are all good things that i am strongly considering for sure so have i decided on what brand. I will put in for my system no jesus i have not decided on a brand. I'm open to suggestions from all of you um you know i'm i'm really don't know someone had made a comment.
Too in the chat because someone had asked me. If i decided on a brand and then someone came in and answered it doesn't matter because he's going to install whatever people give him for free. I i don't think that particular person watches my channel enough because no i'm not necessarily going to install something just because i got it for free that's not how this is going to work. I'm going to install what i want to so typically the way that i'll work is i'll kind of narrow down on some brands and then um.

I'll decide which ones. I want to go to and then i might reach out to the manufacturer and if if they don't want to work with me then so be it i may still use their product. And i may just buy it myself who knows you know it just depends. I'm not about just making money from this i'm about having fun with this and of course.

If i can get something discounted or for free then yeah that sounds great but only if i can still make the videos. The way that i want to make them so i even have some interesting ideas that i can't really spoil yet. But i have an idea let's see how i can say this carefully without spilling the beans. I want my wife to be involved in this okay.

And i want her to be involved in the process and i want her to be on camera. But i'm not necessarily going to be there okay so that's about all that i'm gonna give of that. But it's going to involve the air conditioning system um. And it's going to involve my wife um having conversations about the air conditioning system okay.

So that's all that i'm gonna say. But it's it's a really cool idea so hopefully i can make it work all right let's see what else we got going on in here. Uh hrv erv for outside air is key and and will yes. That is definitely i want outside air for sure okay my favorite time of the year is the fall in the winter.

When i can sleep with my windows open at night time. But my wife actually hates sleeping with the windows open because every noise outside wakes her up see i can sleep anywhere right. But i love the cool air and all that stuff so yes an hrv energy recovery ventilator whatever is definitely going to be part of my system for sure so uh maker. The project manager uh something similar to that will something similar okay um.

You have installed a few bosch ids units. They are really nice. And super quiet uh jaguar. So bosch is definitely on my radar um.

I know that bosch does have some problems with humidity control. But fortunately enough here in southern california. We really don't have humidity in fact. I may even consider adding a humidifier to my installation project now um.

What was it bill spoon reached out to me and he was saying that from truetech tools. He was saying that you know just simply upgrading the envelope of my home may solve some of my humidity problems. And there's a very good point and that's that's possible. But if we don't get the humidity high enough then i may have to add a humidifier to my system so um.
But yeah the bosch ones that might be something that i'll consider you know there's a lot of things that go into it and i really want to kind of get people's opinions and uh go from there. So if y'all. Have ideas and different things and manufacture pictures feel free to tag me in messages or whatever you can tag them in messages to me you know give me exposure that'd be great so would i like to put my new stickers on a walk in evaporator that i install no. John deere fan um.

I don't really associate. My hvacr videos brand with my normal refrigeration business. I don't like to draw unneeded attention to me so no i typically don't that's part of the reason. Why i designed this hat.

Without my logo on it because i just wanted to say hvacr and have my color scheme on it. But i don't want it to necessarily hvacr videos. So i just don't need to draw unwanted attention to my my business um let's see you change fluorescent lights regularly and they do make noise that's right uh she will work in the white noise department of the new system hvac videos uh jesus yeah. That's actually one of the biggest issues guys um.

I'm gonna get a uh decibel meter. Where you can measure the the sound and if you guys could only hear how loud my air conditioning return air fan the sound that it makes it actually puts my entire family to sleep. And there's we've we've lived in this house for eight years with this horribly designed system. And we've all gotten used to it so it's kind of funny because when my wife wants everybody to wake up on a saturday.

All she has to go do is turn the fan to the auto position because we run it in the on position every night and everybody falls asleep to it so everybody has gotten so accustomed to the sound. The white noise sound that the high static on the return side makes that um you know that's going to go away. And i keep warning them guys you aren't going to know what to do because they're gonna have to get white noise generators or something because they're not going to hear anything when we install this new system for sure um. We would need to know the size of your house and how much rooms uh daniel.

It's a four bedroom home. And it's approximately 1800 square feet. So it's not a giant home so. But i'm doing a load calculation so i'll find out the load of the system.

But i'm guessing that i'm gonna need a three possibly a four ton. But i'm leaning more towards a three ton because we're currently running a four ton and i kind of feel like the system's a little bit over size. But when we get done with the load calculation we'll find out especially after we make the energy upgrades to the home. I i'm really thinking that we can get away with a three three and a half ton.
Something like that is what i'm hoping for so um. Let me. See what else we got going on in here. Uh central.

Return sucks yep all right would i install mini splits it's a consideration. But it's not something that i necessarily want to do uh the downside to mini splits is that they become obsolete. Very fast. Typically your air conditioning system is going to last 10 to 20 years and in 10 years.

The mini split head that you need they don't sell it anymore in 10 years. You know so. That's been my experience with mini splits in general is by the time you need to replace just the head. Oh you can't get that you need to upgrade the condensing unit and the head.

You know so that's one of the downsides to mini splits and they're kind of a pain in the butt to clean. I realize that they make the bib kits and different things for them. But it's kind of a pain. So have i made burgers with the r290 barbecue refrigerant.

No that's kind of a funny story cyborg sheep uh no i still have a a 15 pound cylinder of r2 not r290 right because i was curious about this company that i got so many recommendations about and they were an online retailer of refrigerant grade r290 and i got it and it smells like barbecue pro pain so it's not refrigerant grade r290. So um. I haven't been barbecuing a lot with propane lately so if i need to i'll hook that up it was a waste of money because i think i spent like 150 bucks or 200 bucks for the. Drum and it's like.

Dude i could have paid 3999. And gotten the barbecue propane from the gas station and been the same thing so commercial buildings always have those white noise generators mounted above the ceilings that's very interesting all right so why don't i use controllers like the ke2 ones that i used in my video that i actually just released today more often so if you haven't watched the video yet it just uploaded on my channel a couple hours ago. It was a walk in freezer that had a bad defrost clock. And i ended up installing a ke2 controller that had built in defrost.

So why don't i use those more often or a dixel controller or a danfoss erc controller that have built in defrost. I actually don't like the electronic controllers. They're not my favorite that have built in defrost because it's hard to actually see the defrost in weird situations. Where you have consistent icing up issues.

I've run into these issues now it's rare. But i've run into them before where it's like it keeps icing up and you can't find anything else wrong. And the only thing i could think is let's just try changing the controller and then you solve the problem with a defrost clock like a mechanical defrost clock. You can usually look at it you can mark it you can see that it's keeping time that it's actually going into defrost.
But when you have a microprocessor controlled controller that has built in defrost. You don't really know unless you have like the full crazy systems that have you know communication where you can actually see it on a graph like if you go with the the high end ke2 evap efficiency controllers those are actually pretty neat because you can hook your computer up to them and you can see uh trending data for like a couple weeks. And you you can see graphs and you can see it go into defrost every day and come out of defrost and like you can you can diagnose just from those graphs. It's actually really neat now that's not what i installed on my walk in freezer.

I use their low temp plus defrost. Which is kind of like their economy brand evaporator controller and it worked out really nice so definitely check out the video. But i just don't use them very much because i'm just not very comfortable with them. But i'm starting to go to that trend especially in stores.

Where we have blowing sand and different things like that that's what i'm really going to be leaning towards for sure. So let me cross a few things off my idea my list right here. I have a list in front of me. When i do these live streams.

And it's just kind of like talking points. So that way i don't forget to talk about certain things uh. Let's see what else we got going on in the chat. What am i missing um.

Oh sean michael. What's up bud sean is local to me we've run into each other a few times at some of the local areas sean's a really cool dude. He's uh pretty active on uh linkedin actually so um. But yeah what's up man how you doing all right uh.

Let's see uh been a while any news on my house project. Sean yeah. That's kind of what i was talking about no news. Yet right now at the process.

We're at right now we haven't made any decisions at all uh. Just currently working with my buddy adam uh muffin. And he's helping me do the load calculation on the house um. I believe he's using quick model.

I think is what he's using to draw the 3d drawings of the house and then i don't know if he's going to use quick model to do the load calculation itself. I don't know i'm still learning all this stuff so um. But yeah working with my buddy adam. We haven't made any decisions uh people are giving me ideas in the chat right now.

But that's about it how often would i recommend cleaning the evaporator in a standard split system in a house um well you want to change the filter probably every 30 days. Ish depending on the type of filter now if you have like a five inch media filter. Yeah that's not going to be changed. But every couple months.

But it really depends on how often your system is plugging up the filter. If you run a system with a plugged up filter. You're gonna run into low evaporator temperatures. Which is potentially going to cause freeze up issues so depending on what kind of filter you have is going to determine how often you need to clean the evaporator now if you have the the most high end filter filtration system you realistically shouldn't have to clean your evaporator.
But every couple years so it really just depends on what kind of filter. You have on your system. Um. Oh.

We're going to cover that right now. So i want to talk about bettering yourself right and and i cover this a lot. My buddy trevor matthews over at refrigeration mentor covers this a lot. Too um.

I have my own way of saying. Things and sometimes it might be kind of harsh. Okay. But if you are a technician.

That is miserable at your job. If it sucks working for the company you work for if your boss is a jerk. The only person to blame about your problems is you you have the power to change everything okay. That plain and simple there's no ifs ands or buts about it you have the power to change your situation.

If you are miserable do something about it okay. Now remember the way that i address things when i'm frustrated. When someone's irritating. Me i always instantly look at myself and try to reflect on myself from another perspective from from the outside looking in am.

I sure that i'm not the one being a jerk. Am. I sure that i'm not the one being unreasonable am. I sure that i'm not the stubborn one because i do have stubbornness in me so i have to reflect on myself first okay always do that once you've reflected on yourself then it's really just a matter of speaking with your family and deciding what's the best course of action to make you a happier person there might be repercussions with you leaving your company.

There might be consequences for sure okay. But there might be benefits that might outweigh those consequences so you are responsible for your own future you are responsible for your own misery. Okay you have the power to change. It.

If you're a person. That's always pity me poor me. It's always everybody else's fault you need to figure that one out because you're responsible for changing yourself okay as technicians we need to better ourselves we need to research we need to educate ourselves okay don't just trust some guy on youtube okay don't trust me just because i said that this is how this works you need to do your own research. Okay.

There's so many people making content on youtube and other social media platforms and i come across stuff all the time and i'm like wow. That is absolutely wrong. There's nothing about what they just said that is correct. But it sounds.

Convincing okay so you have to do your research. Don't just trust something that i say or any of my friends says you need to listen to what we say and then do. Some research and evaluate whether or not that's the right way for you to approach that too okay as my buddy bill. Curious hvac guy says is be curious right start reading.
My buddy bill reaches out to me sometimes with some of the funniest questions. He's like he'll call me. And he'll be like hey man. I'm curious about how this works and you know and i may not have the answers.

But i'll just kind of like well this is how i think it works and this is how it's worked you know fixing this problem with me. But he's a very curious person by nature and i think that's really important we all need to do the research. Okay as apprentices as new people in the trade when you're on a roof working with someone win and able take pictures of equipment that you don't know what it is take pictures of model numbers and serial numbers. Just be careful.

Because some places you aren't allowed to take pictures okay. So know where you're at um and research that stuff when you go home you know just because you get off work doesn't mean that it's time to stop thinking about work better yourself pick a an article a night an article a week. Something like that set some kind of a goal and try to better yourself okay because remember you and solely you are responsible for your happiness. So you can change anything that you want to okay.

Um. Let. Me cross that one off my list uh. Let me.

See what i got going on in this chat. What am. I missing culture culture is key that is right man um let me see it's funny because i was recently out of lowe's and i was listening to a lowe's employee try to sell you know some old lady on on her air filter and which one she should buy and i was like man should i open my mouth or not like i was like and i ended up not and i kind of felt guilty about it. But i just i was in a rush.

And i didn't really have time for a full on full length conversation. But you know for those of you that don't know if there's homeowners watching this if there's business owners watching this you know it's fine. I i have technicians business owners homeowners everybody watches this stuff. But people will email you what's the best filter to use in my system.

And it's like well it really depends on how your system is designed. I mean. If you have a poorly designed system then then the cheapest least restrictive filter is going to be the best for you okay. Because your system has to be designed there's a there's a pressure drop across that filter in order for that filter to filter the air to those tiny minute microns that they say they can filter them to right you're the the fan either pushing or pulling.

That air through that filter has to be big enough to move the amount of air that your air conditioner needs so. If your system's not designed for um. You know a merv. 13 filter then you don't necessarily want to install one of those okay so it really depends on how your system is designed um.
Let's look in this chat. And see what else we got going on in here. Um. How rough are refrigeration hours.

I'm getting bored of resi hvac uh. You know it really depends on where you go into if you go into light commercial refrigeration um. Like you know i had a busy week last week. And i think i worked like 65 hours that's busy for me okay.

I don't necessarily want to work any more than that that's like my max. But if i went to work for a supermarket company. I could probably easily get 80 hours a week. I mean you know if i wanted it the potential is there so it really depends on what you want from it okay.

But in in general refrigeration light commercial refrigeration and air conditioning like i do keeps me busy year long right i might get a few heating calls in the winter. I'm in southern california. So we don't know what cold is um. I'm gonna get uh lots of refrigeration calls in the winter.

Lots of refrigeration calls in the summer and a lot of air conditioning calls in the summer. So i stay busy pretty much year round now. I don't do any hot side work. I don't work on cooking appliances or anything like that so.

If i did that i'd get even more work. So um. Let's see aprilaire makes some pretty good filters. Just stay away from those pleated ones with lots of pleats.

Unless your return is set up to handle it yeah. Many years ago. Jason johnson. I put an air conditioning system into my mom's house and i installed the biggest aprilaire media filter that they had with the like accordion pleats that you slide in i know a lot of people complain about those.

But it worked great for my mom's house. They love it. But i designed their system for the static pressure drop that that filter was going to have so it works perfect and when i you know it's my mom so when i i think at the time i put in like i think it was like the highest efficiency system. It was like a 16 or an 18 16 seer.

I think or something like that within reason without going variable capacity. I think that's what i put in her house like 10 years ago and um. But i i deduct all that stuff and i designed everything and i made sure that i added that static pressure drop that the filter had and i included that in my design calculation. So and then i gave her i think i bought her two cases of them i don't even think they've still gone through all the filters like they they still have a giant box full of them because they change them like every couple months or something like that um merv vs hepa is that even a logical question if you have to ask that question you definitely don't even want to consider hepa.

Okay. Hepa is insanely restrictive and hepa almost will need uh basically it just. It's not going to happen. Okay.

You're not going to put hepa filtration on a standard residential split system you are seriously going to have to over engineer. That system to work with the hepa filter hepa filters are hospital grade filtration um. Very restrictive so you need to seriously have an engineer help you design a system that can have a help a hepa filter on it for sure um let's see. Jeff keith says supermarket refrigeration.
There and he's averaging 100 hours a week. Yeah see i have no interest in 100 hours a week. But to each their own you know i think that's one thing. I think that our trade needs help with is the amount of hours that some people have to work and while i know a lot of people that love the overtime and they love the work.

It's it's it's eating away at you with you not being home you know it's it's beating your body down. And that's something that i covered in a recent video of mine. You know when i first got into the trade. It was just about money for me like i just wanted every single ounce of overtime you know like i said i worked 65 hours last week.

I've certainly worked more than that um. But it's just it starts. It's funny too the trends that you start seeing. It's ironic.

Because you can work 60 to 65 hours and your paycheck is this big right you can work. 80 hours and your actual paycheck will be lower than the other one because you now bumped up into the next tax bracket and the taxes that they took out reduced. It's it's kind of a weird formula so it's kind of funny. But i was talking recently in my my video that i released today just about taking care of your body.

You you know in the beginning of this trade. I have some regrets from being in the trade and my eyesight and my hearing is the regrets that i have i can think of working in stainless steel fabricator shops where they're using grinders and saws and lasers and different things to cut metal. And i used to just sit in there all day long build in refrigerators form with no hearing protection or anything on and i'm starting to pay the prices for that right because i'm having hearing issues and uh you know i have an issue where my eyes don't my my eyelids. I don't blink fast enough so if something's coming towards my eye.

It'll oftentimes get in my eye. And it's ironic because i can go into the doctor. And i can be like oh okay you're going to do this now. And i can literally probably tell them the process that they're going to take because i've had them clean my eyes out so many times and i can tell you too that after the third or fourth time every doctor.

That i've seen has says wow you have a lot of scar tissue on your retinas and it's like yeah i know you know because i've scratched them or corneas. I don't know what the difference between them is but basically they take a black light they put a uv dye on your eyeball they put it on there and then they can see all the scratches and different things on your eyes. And every time they're like wow. There's a lot of scar tissue there and it's like yeah.
I know you know and it's from me not wearing safety glasses. All the time right ironically. Too there was one time. I had safety glasses on it was windy outside and it went around the safety glasses and still got on my ice.

Damn stuff. But um take care of your body you know i'm not that old. I'm 39 years old but i'm already starting to regret some of the things i'm definitely not in the best shape. I can be my back's currently sore right now from a long weekend.

You know there's lots of things i can do so take care of your bodies. That way you know because you can replace a broken drill you can replace a broken s. Man manifold you can replace all your tools. But you can't replace your body you know there's not much you can do once your hearing goes away once your eyesight goes away you're kind of screwed.

So you want to make sure that you can still be there for your family. When that time comes. Um uh. Sean michael.

Says industrial gets gnarly too when it comes to like overtime and stuff. Yeah. Industrial seems very interesting for sure uh. Let's see what else we got uh scott thank you so very much my buddy scott hvac rookie.

What is up my friend we're starting to plan uh uh different um uh events. Scott so i don't know if you plan on going to any of them this year uh. I did just get an invite to be a speaker at the hvacr training symposium. I'm kind of going back and forth.

But i think i'm gonna go uh that's brian orr's hvac schools training symposium is going to be in uh clermont florida. Here in the end of january. I think is what it's going to be so uh very very strong potential that i'm going to be at that this year. I'm definitely going to be at the ahr in atlanta.

I will definitely be there so let's uh let's talk scott. I don't know if you're going to be at any of those events or if you're considering it let's talk about it man scott's a good but of mine. He lives here in california. He used to live local to me.

But he actually moved a little bit further north. But uh. It's kind of cool to get to catch up with him every once in a while so uh lots of action at the pineapple party huh yeah that's right there you go we're gonna oh that's i'll get a pineapple themed airbnb for the the calo symposium for sure so all right let's see what else we got going on in here uh. We're gonna have a big party at the pineapple themed airbnb.

No we're not all right let's see uh right on scott yeah. We'll we'll have to plan some stuff man uh yeah. Ahr vegas. Oh my gosh for sure that was awesome.

I can't wait until it's vegas again because vegas is only like four hours away from my house so five hours maybe if i drive conservatively. I'm a pretty slow driver so um. But yeah vegas was epic dude. That was awesome that was awesome for sure.
Uh uh. Sit up straight stretch with bill. Neil c. Vids.

Yeah. Bill is always getting me man. He messages. Me did you stretch this morning.

I'm like shut up bill. He's always trying to get me to stretch uh. So a long time ago. Y'all.

I had a video on my channel. Where i worked on a refrigerator and it still cracks me up. Y'all are so funny so i mentioned in the video that because of the sensitive location. It was easier for me to take my trailer and go get the refrigerator and bring it back to my shop.

Okay and i worked on it in my shop. And i mentioned that it was at a very sensitive location and uh you know and then i people have been trying to guess. I've had the funniest stuff. People say that the refrigerator was from the nsa.

They say that it was from a prison. They say that it was from a government black ops facility like all these different guesses that just cracked me up okay guys i'm gonna spill the beans it was from an airport okay it's not that cool so basically during covet. The airport was pretty much down to the minimal amount of employees and in order for me to go on the airport's property. I have to have an escort okay so it was an airport in orange county california and i had to go in order to get there i have to have an escort walking with me through the airport at all times.

Well. They didn't have enough staff to have an escort that could still make food. But then have to stand with me the whole time so it was easier to go and have them push the refrigerator. They literally pushed it out of a terminal door exit and then i loaded it in my trailer.

And took it home or to the office and worked on it so yeah. It was an airport sorry to spoil everybody's guesses. It was not a secret nsa government black ops facility. Y'all are so funny with your comments uh let's see what else we got going on in here dad do me a favor.

Everybody please smash the thumbs up button. We have 93 likes and 179 people watching this so please smash that thumbs up button. It definitely helps out the stream. Y'all.

All right can i give you a shop tour uh daniel my shop. I mean it's nothing to be toured about guys uh it really isn't i i don't maybe someday. But there's nothing really spectacular about my shop at all so um let me see what else we got going on in the chat. And there's that uh shop tour right on uh.

Jason johnson says john wade airport. I'm not going to confirm nor deny so just not gonna all right a third shop tour an airport. I said i did hvacr north send it to you yeah. That's funny huh secret government facilities.

Look away and whistles that's right um uh. Let's see what else we got going on here. Wait chris. All i have to do is apply at the airport and you take a test and get your badge.

Dave k. Yeah. I don't want the responsibility of having a badge uh. It's really easy for me so here's here's my get up when i go to the airport um.
My escort takes responsibility for me so the other day not the other day about a month or two ago. I was working out at the airport and i had to take my torches in and i had to braise something and and i i was like we need to go talk to tsa make sure i'm cleared and tsa basically said. We don't care what you bring in here that person is responsible for you and it's them that has to answer so bring whatever you want i like that it's easier for me than there's no liability or responsibility on me. It's all on them.

So i prefer not to be approved to draw or walk into the airport by myself. It's just easier plus on top of that it you get less nuisance calls. When the customer actually has to be there with you and see and you have less complaints about how long things take you because they're standing there watching you and it's like hey. This is what i got to do this is the whole process they get to see everything versus me having a badge and just walking in and doing the work and then sending them the bill and they're like well.

Why is it so much well because they have no idea because they weren't there. With me. So i prefer just having an escort. It's easier um.

All right let's see what else we got going on here uh. Dave k. Says he works at pha and it's not a big responsibility. Yeah fair enough um.

All right uh. Let's see what else we got going on here. Um. Oh.

The william payne. The hvac overtime show. Yeah. So the last hvac overtime show.

I was not there neither was joe. But um. We had a really really cool guest. So you guys definitely need to go check it out uh.

It's definitely worth a watch um really really awesome guest. So um. All right uh why oh. This is a good question.

So why in the heck do i use automatic reset high pressure controls versus manual. Reset. High pressure controls. This answer is kind of complicated in a perfect world.

It's best to use a manual reset high pressure control okay. Because if the system ever gets to the cutout threshold. It turns itself off and and then it stays off until you come. And you reset.

It and then you check the system out. And you're good to go i work in southern california. We get extremely high temperatures right. I was working out in the coachella valley.

Which is the palm springs area today uh it was a hundred and hundred and 13 degrees. I think at nine in the morning and the hottest time of the day is about 4 30 to 5 pm. Okay so that's not even the hottest time of the day it probably got to about a hundred and sixteen hundred and eighteen uh total maybe even 120. I don't know um and they have some monsoonal moisture.

So they had some humidity. Too. Which made it even worse um. In that situation.

I have a lot of customers that don't do routine preventative maintenance. Okay. So we have a lot of nuisance calls because they're not cleaning their equipment. It trips on high pressure boom problem right and then we have to go out there reset the pressure control clean the equipment go on those calls would come in on a weekly basis and it is so flipping annoying now i realize the alternative right because if they don't do preventative maintenance.
The with an auto reset. It's going to turn on and off on and off. And that's going to damage a compressor. But also on the flip side.

I'm going to get called out there every week to push a dang button okay. That's a pain in the butt so i tend to go more with automatic resets typically with a time delay on there so it has a short time delay um. There's no perfect answer for this i mean in a perfect world. Yeah manual reset for everything.

But because i have these customers that don't do maintenance. It's just too difficult to keep up with all the service calls going around pushing buttons and resetting things um oftentimes. Too uh. It's kind of weird.

But our equipment will actually operate outside of its envelopes because it gets so dang hot on the roofs. The high pressure resets would be insane. It's just nuts and unfortunately. We have a lot of compressor failures.

Because of it you know. It's just nuts. How does ambient temperature. Affect.

Refrigerants. Andrew. Well every refrigerant has thermodynamic properties and they react. A certain way to a certain temperature right here on the tail end of my thing right here is a pressure temperature chart.

It's hard for you to see the whole thing. But it lists probably about 15 different refrigerants because there's all different flavors. All different types and each refrigerant has its own thermodynamic pressure temperature relationships right so at a certain pressure this this. Refrigerant is going to be a certain temperature or vice versa at a certain temperature.

It's going to be a certain pressure so depending on how your system's designed we can predict what kind of pressures. Our system is going to run so ambient temperatures the way that we reject heat. We pull air across the condenser. We absorb the heat from the condenser and we reject it out the top the higher the ambient temperature the less heat.

That that is going to reject or maybe not the less heat. The least less you
