This was a brand new machine that they were having problems with but I was able to get them back up and running.

Got it all wired up, everything put back in what the heck? Seriously, it didn't work when I started it up. This video is brought to you by Sportland Quality, integrity and tradition. All right. We got a call on an ice machine not working and we come up here.

This is a Mana talk machine that was just installed actually and we're getting all kinds of errors all right. So we just started this machine up. Um, let's hit the info button. that's not it.

Let hit the aster long Harvest Power loss. Let say clear all home and let's hit start and see what happens. We'll go into the system service, data, real time, data, time and temperature and it'll tell you what mode it's in and what's going on with it while that's running. I'm going to go ahead and head up to the roof and have a look up there.

come up here. Compressor's running and condenser fan motor was running a minute ago. Let's see if it turns back on. There is a known problem with these machines right now.

Yeah, there's a fan mot. Um where the time delay relay can be a problem and cause short cycling, but that doesn't seem to be the case right now. When I get in here, this compressor contactor is like completely burnt and uh that is a a common sign if you look in here. yeah it's just smoked.

Um, they've got an issue right now with these time delays. This guy right here and I bet you that's the problem with this machine. Bet you the time delay is causing it to short cycle. We're going to watch you make a batch of ice and see what happens.

but pretty confident we're going to need to replace the time delay and the well we know we got to change the contactor for sure because the terminals are all burnt in there really bad. so took a few minutes the unit just went into Harvest I Just want to see what happens I'm just observing at this point I Have a suspicion we know the contactor needs to be replaced and I have a feeling it's from that time delay. Um, the more I thought about it, it's not going to be the pressure control cuz the time delay should be protecting it from short cycling from the pressure control. So the only thing that really causes short cycling right now is that actual time delay in theory.

So we're just waiting to see if anything happens. All right, we just went back into a freeze mode. it just harvested. So what I'm actually going to do is shut it down and um, we are going to bypass this guy.

So all that you need to do here is this guy right here comes off. This guy comes off. just leave it there. This guy right here goes here all right.

So we bypassed the time delay. I'm going to call the distributor. The last time I called him a couple weeks ago, they were backordered. Um, so I'll call them again right now, but at least now we'll have a working machine and then, uh, we can.

Uh, you know, get the parts that we need and hopefully it'll work until then. Well, we are back. Uh, looks like the machine is still working with the bypass timer. Uh, no error messages since the last time I was here.
I'm going to go ahead and shut it off and then, uh, look at this. We've got a full bin so it worked perfectly the entire time. I had it bypassed. I've got finally got a new contactor and a new time delay relay they used in some other one.

I Think ink now. I Don't know I Don't know if that's the same brand or not, but regardless, we're going to swap it out. We've got a bunch of these that we've been having this issue with so turned off power. We're going to swap it out and then we'll test it once we get done.

Got it all wired up, everything put back in. What the heck? Seriously, it didn't work when I started it up. What the flip? It's wired correctly. Red goes to three, Blue goes to two, Yellow goes to one, Yellow goes to the contactor coil.

Red goes to the other side of the contactor coil. That's correct. This relay is not working. Gosh darn it.

What the heck man. I had a brain fart moment I changed the contactor I didn't change the relay I was like why isn't it working? That's funny Ah, good grief. I Would say it's a long day, but it's only like 10:00 in the morning so it hasn't been a long day. All right, let's get that relay.

time delay relay changed out and now for the Moment of Truth What do you know? it's running like it should be. All right, so starts up. The machine just started before I came back up so condenser fan motor will turn on here in just a second. Oh yeah, much much better that way and now we are back to making ice and everything is good.

That was too funny I Hooked up the time delay relay back to the old one man. All right. So I got to save all these parts because this is a warranty thing so we got to return these parts back to the factory. You can see how burnt this contactor is.

it's just all burnt, the points are all pitted it out and the only thing that can cause that is that time delay. So when I initially got called out on this, the machine was working. it was full of ice but they said it wasn't and it had safeties in it. So I came up onto the roof and the contactor was burnt.

Knowing that they have a known issue with this machine, with these issues, the only thing that could burn that contactor would be the time delay and I've seen it before where the time delay just won't even let it turn on. Hence when I accidentally turned it on with the old one, you saw how it just like Ta Ta chattered and didn't start. It just has a mind of its own is is doing its thing. So pretty confident that was the only issue.

Also, when I bypass the time delay it's been running for 2 weeks while I was waiting for these parts so you know that's it. So we're going to wrap this one up. tell the customer to keep an eye on it. Sometimes when you're working on this equipment you have to make educated guesses.

When I first walked up to the machine, it had a long was a long Harvest or long freeze I can't remember which one it had one of those errors but uh. also in the end of the video when I was kind of recapping everything I said when I first walked up, the machine was full. No, the machine was not full. When I first got there, it was empty so it was clearly off on a safety.
Something was wrong. I went up and I reset the safety and turned it on in. The machine made ice and it was a brand new machine like installed weeks previous. just just a couple weeks previous to this service call.

So I I wasn't concerned about a refrigerant leak. I I I knew that it had to be something simple and I already had my suspicions because we've been having a run of these time delays going bad. Uh, installed I didn't get video footage of it but I just did another one where I installed two brand new machines brand new and like 2 days later they weren't working and I went out there and both the contactors are completely burnt and I was like what the heck and then that's when I found out about the time delay issue. So the only thing that can cause that short cycling to that contactor is a bad time delay because the time delay is there to prevent short cycling, right? So there's just something going going on in that time delay.

So I had a suspicion I had to I kind of made an educated guess I walked up I saw the burnt contactor I knew this was a known problem I bypassed it I knew we had to order that time delay in the contactor even if there was something else going on. we knew we had to order that. So my logic was go ahead and bypass it because that was the factory recommendation in the meantime, that way they can have an ice machine is just bypass it and when I came back it was full with no errrors. So that confirmed to me and that was like two weeks later cuz it took forever to get the time delay in the contactor.

So I came back out. it had no errors in it and it was full of ice and the customer hadn't had a problem so I was pretty confident that was the only problem. Went ahead and changed it and obviously you guys saw my little mess up because I didn't change the time delay I just changed the contactor, started it up and then you. But the cool thing was you guys got to see what that time delay does.

That time delay intermittently makes contact and that's why when I turned it on, you heard the chattering. that's what's happening and that's what was burning up. That contactor is constant chattering like that. So I went ah and put the new time delay in.

Machine was good, everything else is cool. It's now been a couple I think it's been a week since I did that. So and everything's good. So that was it.

It wasn't a really difficult one, but you know it's just one of those issues. And furthermore, I've been uh. I just installed a new ice machine like uh, a week ago and on Startup I just bypassed the time delay cuz it had the old one. I was like I'm not even playing this game so we just ordered a new time delay for that one and I had a technician going and put it on today and then I've got another machine that I installed a couple weeks ago.
Went ahead and ordered a new time delay in a contactor for that one too and haven't even you know been back out yet? We're waiting for it to come in, but it is a known issue. If you work on those Indigo machines that have the time delay up in the roof, figure out if that's the one you need to do. If you're selling a machine, make sure you're bypassing that from the get-go That way you're not eating time when you're doing the warranty work. And I'll tell you because whenever you do warranty work now.

Luckily I didn't sell these machines. Okay, this one that in this video I did not sell it. the customer supplied it. So I have no sympathy when it comes to warranty work.

But normally warranty work, they don't pay you your full full labor rates. They only pay like certain amounts like this time delay. they would have paid me an hour. That's it.

That's it. Just an hour. no travel time, no picking up parts. none of that stuff.

So maybe an hour and a half. but still, it's not enough time. Um, so you know if it's a machine that you're selling and you're going to have a hard time eating that warranty cost, make sure you get ahead of it before cuz these problems get to be a bit frustrating now because I didn't sell this machine. I Just back build a customer the difference for the warranty and they understand that so it is what it is.

Thank you so very much for making it to the end of the video. I Really do appreciate you If you're interested in supporting the channel. I'm going to tell you right now, the easiest way to support this channel is just watch the videos from beginning to end. That really is the easiest way.

I had the same issue with a time delay that looks identical to that in a heatcraft condensing unit that I installed recently. Immediately it just chattered the contactor from first startup.

More than time delay relay issues on those Indigos . Condenser fan cycle switches blowing up, condenser motor brackets breaking at the welds, Danfoss harvest valves sticking, Danfoss check valve restrictions . Manitowoc pays my mortgage. 🙂

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @jde1780 says:

Maybe… The back EMF from the coil, when power is released, it destroyed the solid state delay. The delay might not be protected?
Used to see that with old DC relay drivers.
    Maybe they're using cheap SCRs/Triacs?
    Just "armchair" guessing.

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @dustinhensley2208 says:

    HEY!
They no longer use time delays at all Per mfg. they sent a bulletin out to bypass it and order a “time- delay bypass kit” which includes a new wiring diagram to place over existing diagram without time delay.

What is it with refrigeration contactors that they cheap out and remove a pole? Like this obvious two pole single phase with only one set of contacts, or the two contact three phase versions you see all the time? You never see that in any other industrial control systems.

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @crisken5105 says:

went to a manitowoc class this wednesday and the company who made those relays had changed their way of making them. this caused issues. long story short manitowoc wants you to replace those relays with the new ones made from a different company

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @inothome says:

Can they use any less materials making that contactor? Talk about making stuff as cheap as possible. As little stamped steel as possible, coil is exposed, of course single pole on a two leg system….. I think cheap Chinese crap is better than that contactor. Of course the timer chewed it up, but just overall companies trying to save as much costs as possible in manufacturing.

Mid 80’s-mid 90’s we were the first distributor for Hoshizaki. Best ice maker ever, it had an all stainless steel evaporator with a life time warranty!
Mid 90’s to mid 2000’s we were the Scotsman distributor in our area, mostly due to the “cuber” and ice preference of bar goers. Mid 2000’s-2022 we sold, serviced, and installed Manitowoc. We turned from those when they went woke and sold out to China becoming a plastic turd.
We now push Kool Air which is truthfully the OG Manitowoc and so far have had good luck.
The warranty still sucks just as you stated. They barely cover fuel for the truck and where we are, give us “in distributor” credit only, no actual pay out.
We’ve resorted to invoicing the customer 100% the repair and giving them a blank warranty claim form to submit to the manufacture for reimbursement. I think it’s best for them to be the voice of reason after buying a brand new product that fails.

Your relationship with Manitowoc must not be that great, every company I've worked for bills them the hours we used a truck charge etc and any extra time for things be far away. But we usually only did the work if we were DISPATCHED from Manitowoc IE the customer called and we were an authorized provider. You can always call and get concessions from tech support too, I have done that a LOT especially with parts shortages… 'hey I have a sporlan catch all, not an Emerson filter dryer and the supply house said 7 days my customer needs ice NOW' things like that

We used to stock "choice" water valves which are the same MFG for Manitowoc water valves same QR code on the body etc etc $50 instead of $150 I would get concessions to use those instead but you HAVE to have tech support approve it. Submit your warranty parts with concession numbers and boom paid!!!!
