This video is brought to you by spore'ln quality, integrity and tradition. Today's service calls on a set of cooks, chores, so 2, 4, 6 8 drawer unit. They say it's not like 50 or 60 degrees called me. Last night was scheduled up for this morning, so they were supposed to empty em out yeah and they did so we're gon na go through it and see what we can figure out.

So, where I yeah sixty-two degrees - and I can hear that the refrigerants flowing and the solenoid belts falling and on we're gon na start up on the roof, see what's going on this one actually doesn't look bad we're getting a lot of rain. So I imagine we're gon na see more of these low charge calls really show themselves when their head pressure control valves try to bypass again I'm making an assumption. I don't know for a fact, so my compressors are in here we'll get these pulled off. So my compressor in question is going to be this.

One right here feels like it's running. The sight glass looks to be either completely full or completely empty yeah. We got hot discharge line, lukewarm suction line, so let's hope it's running will getcha and check it out. We are, we are definitely looking low on charge.

You can see my outdoor ambience about 58 degrees right now, we're running 404. A we've got a 70 degree saturation temperature, the sightglass, was looking to either be clear or empty, and I can tell you that it's empty more than likely the charge actually isn't that low, it's probably low, just a winter charge is my guess what's happening here. Is this head pressure control valve behind here this guy right here, it's probably trying to bypass and there's not enough refrigerant in the system, so I've got all the lines for the head. Crusher control valve are cold yeah, so this head pressure controlled out.

It just doesn't have enough refrigerant in the system, so we're gon na get it charged up before we get going too crazy. What I did was I shut off the compressor and we're gon na open up the the gauges and we're gon na go. Do a leat check downstairs so we're going to open up the high side, we're gon na open up the low side and we're gon na let the pressures equalize between the two. So that way, we cannot leak check the evaporators we'll try to knock those out real quick to see where the leaks are at or what cardboard is your best friend this one's actually pretty clean? I'm not surprised by this one, but we're gon na take that cover off pressures are equalized out and we'll start doing a leak check.

So we can find this. Is the detect, select nothing here? It would be going off. There was a leak. Usually I think that was just me.

Let's try that again I went ahead and turned it on low and you're still picking it up over. Here, usually, don't see leaks on this side over here. It's not up high watch as we get lower and lower it'll start picking it up what's down there and it's not something. I'm gon na fix on that coil.

So we'll just add that to the list and move on down the line, but some big blue soap bubbles on it. So it's definitely there. I'm gon na go ahead and do one at a time. So I'm gon na put this one completely back together.
Then take this one apart then work down the line. This is my next clone, I'm not a fan of how that sensing bulb is ran, how it's just dangling there I mean it's functional, it works, but I'd like to see it secured better out of the way. So maybe when we do the leak, repairs and change, the coils will reroute that and make it all pretty check this one. This is the second one usually start at the bottom leak detector on high, certainly gon na be leaking at that power head soon.

All rusted out doesn't look like there's gon na, be anything on this one. Usually, it pick it up by now little tip as I'm coming along like when I'm done with this, I'm gon na spin this motor to make sure that it actually spins, because once I put the cage and floors in it's a nightmare to get in there and I'm not turning the power back on yet so I always spin it with my screwdriver to make sure it spins all right. This one looks like it's fairly new, so he definitely has a new power head yeah. It looks good all right.

You know I'm gon na change those power heads even if they're not leaking those those nasty-looking ones. So I think there's three total. We need to change well. Actually, the first coil that has a leak will change the expansion valve with the coil and then we'll change to more power heads because there was the one that already looked too new just to be safe.

Our heads are easy and cheap you're, not picking anything else. So it looks like just that one coil down at the end that's leaking and then we'll change those power heads preemptively just before they start leaking cuz they're all rusted we're gon na get this guy back together and then leech up on the roof. If it's not raining, even though I checked them as I went along, listen that one kidding so again, I'm always going to open these up and check to see if we have anything hitting turn it off and figure out this one's fine, this one's fine. It's just that first, one got to fix it much better.

I just had to pull the man motor itself off right there and move some wires around. So all is good. Now we're gon na go up on the roof all right. Just because I found a leak downstairs does not mean I stopped at that leak.

Big-Picture diagnosis, we finished leak, checking the system, it's more than likely that we have multiple leaks on this unit, but we're going to go ahead and do our best to leave check the rest. The leak detector just turned on we're gon na go through the whole system. Now checking starting at the condenser and working our way down. Condensers marked if it's not marked figured out.

This condenser looks like it has oil all over it head pressure, control valve. Nothing doesn't look like anything yet, but again you don't just stop it. The obvious, because that's what gets you in trouble, you always continue to look the rest of the system. Now, in order to do this, I had to shut down the rack in my situation.
That's fine! We can do that, but in other people's situations you may have to schedule something like that. They always leak in the packings. Whether or not it's a really big leak is the question like some boogers on that dryer, but nothing jumping out at me. As of yet I'll hit the bottom of the condenser, which is all up in here, just doing a quick pass on it, nothing jumping out at me: let's go leak, check the compressor on the other side pressure controls are very big culprits for leaking that, don't it's Like it might have oil, but no okay, so we're looking pretty good.

I'm suspect I'm gon na investigate that receiver packing a little bit more and see if it's something that can just be tightened up. If not we'll add that to the quote, but we're looking pretty good. I think I did a sufficient job again. I'm not you know.

Gon na give them a thousand percent guarantee, there's no other leaks, but I did my best to leak check with what I had while I had it. You know and I'm trying to actually hurry to, because it's getting ready to rain on me right now. It's actually sprinkling at the moment so get this guy charged up now got the refrigerant hooked up. I already purged my lines and we're ready to start adding charge.

So what we're going to do is we're going to clear the sight glass. Then I'm going to pump the receiver down check the receiver level and fill it up to the three quarter mark looks like our compressor was cycling off on low pressure. So now we turn back on all right. I'm gon na show some images and some video with my thermal imaging camera I'll, have links in the show notes to which camera that I use, but I just want to give some context.

I realize I'm still used getting used to this camera, but I realize that what it shows me on the screen. It doesn't necessarily show on the video - and you guys will see what I'm talking about, because it actually shows temperatures on my screen and I reference those temperatures as I'm looking at the receiver level. Okay, so I'm currently testing out a few different thermal cameras and I'm actually gon na be start reviewing tools on my new youtube channel, which is going to be called HVAC are tools it's already created, but I just don't have any videos on there. You link it and everything soon, but anyways.

You guys will see that pop up. When the time comes. It's the site. Glass now has warm liquid Tim.

You can see it going into the dryer before it wasn't. The compressor is still getting flooded back with suction gas because of the over you know the the heavy load and the box of the expansion valves are all flooding. So that's why the compressor looks so cold. What you see down here is the crankcase heater and then this is our discharge line, which is starting to get cool too, but it's good warmer.
You can see. This compressor is running like normal. This one is this: one is, let's take a look at our head pressure, control valve real quick, see what it looks like here. It is right here so condenser fan motor cycling right now see that's the fan motor back there, so we're looking at the receiver.

It's pumped down the system shut off, so this is our liquid level at the moment. So we do need to add a little more refrigerant to this system. The unit is still pumped down and to save myself a little time it wasn't going into a vacuum. I just bypassed the low pressure control and I'm just adding charge to the suction side.

So it's still just stacking up in the receiver, so I don't have to wait for the whole pump down process again and then we'll go check it here in just a second and check the liquid level. Just saves me a couple minutes just got to be careful. You got to know what you're doing here. You don't want to slug the compress or anything all right now we're using the thermal camera.

I haven't heated up the receiver at all, I'm going to see if I can see this liquid level drop down to the bottom of the receiver 7375 remember we were just about half last time, we're coming up on the halfway mark right now. Seventy five! Seventy seven at the three-quarter mark, so I'm going to go ahead and do the heat producing device now and we want to see if I, if that's accurate, so right at the three-quarter mark all right. Let's see check it out, it's at the three-quarter mark. You can clearly see by these lines right here nice.

Our system is now running, we're properly charged sight. Glass is clear: we're gon na go ahead and wrap everything up. We cover flooding back because again my box is under a heavy load, but we're gon na go ahead and wrap this up and then submit a call to the customer. It's actually good that I came down here to check this, because what I found I took the thermal camera and I'll show up throw up the images right now, but this drawer is cold.

This drawer is not and those two are cold. So I believe this is the one with the leak, but this one right here has a bad power head more than likely and that's also the power head. If I remember right that I didn't like so yeah we'll get in there and get those taken care. Ok, nothing too crazy.

This was a service call on a set of cooks drawers. I ended up going out there and finding that the system was low on charge, which I kind of already had an indication that it was when I walked up to it, because I could hear the it's a very distinct hissing sound that the expansion valves make when They're being fed vapor - and I could just it's one of those things you learned here after some time, but I had a hunch I did go on to the roof and I found that the system was dramatically low on charge. So I went ahead and equalized out my compressor pressures, highside and low-side and then went downstairs found a leaking. Evaporator found a couple power heads that didn't look good and then, at the end of the video I ended up, showing that I found that one of those power heads was bad but anyways.
I showed a few clips with a thermal imaging camera, just kind of playing with it showing liquid level. You know I was really hoping that the thermal imager would show the liquid level of the receiver when it's pumped down before I had to heat up the receiver. Unfortunately, it's a little difficult. I do see and again I referenced some temperatures that the video wasn't showing.

But I do I am able to see temperatures on my screen and it does kind of give me an idea that hey, there's different temperatures from the bottom of the receiver to the top of the receiver. So it kind of indicates it I'll play with the cameras. A little bit more, maybe it's just some settings. I need to do to play with it.

I've tried this in the past and I didn't have very good luck, but I'm trying some new cameras this time so I'll definitely have some links in the show notes for the tools that I used for the thermal camera that I used and yeah that's pretty much. It I really appreciate you guys taking the time to watch this. Do me a favor, you got questions comments. Let me know if I did something wrong.

Most leak detectors cannot pick up small leaks, Use a H10 if you have one . Even with it small leaks can hide from you.

good video, I have the C90 FLIR and the one thing I've noticed is the battery doesn't last for beans. Heating the receiver tank is easily done with a hand held portable propane torch / Bernzomatic. Wait till you check the grid on an ice machine. It shows the wires easy. one I shot showed only 1/2 working so I fixed the connector but they are only mildly warm on the Scotsman I worked on.

I noticed your thermal camera was auto-ranging a lot. When you're trying to see minor differences on something it is usually very helpful to set the camera in manual range mode and set a narrow range somewhat close to what you're trying to measure. If there is a noticeable temperature difference on the compressor face, that is probably the best way to see it.

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Nighthawke70 says:

On the thermal images, the B/W mode has a formal term of Black Hot and White Hot. There are other modes, especially handy for those low temperature situations, checking for liquid fill on accumulators or receivers, cranky electronics, looking for hot spots on the boards or cold nonfunctional parts. Quite fun to use and can save money by time saved on diagnosis.
