Of course they always say they never leave the door open, during this visit the manager said it multiple times but I just grabbed him by the hand and showed him all the times it was left open while I was there.

Before the video gets started, if you guys haven't already, please consider checking out my website Hvacrvideos.com It's a great way to help support the channel. We actually just had a new restock of the hats, which is kind of our number one seller. Um, these are a special hat that I had designed with a black underbill and they're breathable so you don't sweat as much as a normal hat they are Flex fit and I purposely designed them with the Hvacr acronym on there I guess I should be pointing to the right side and I didn't put my logo on there because I wanted everybody to be able to wear them at work and not violate uniform policies. And for the most part, I've heard good feedback about that. So check out the website. We also have T-shirts sweaters and everything and it's just a great way to help support the channel. Let's get on with the video. This video is brought to you by Sportlin. Quality, integrity and tradition. All right. We've got a walk-in cooler this morning that's not working and it looks like it's all iced up. Thermostat says 42 degrees I bet they're leaving the door open would be my thought. wouldn't surprise me. So uh, we're gonna go up top, turn it off, get it disassembled, and then start defrosting it with hot water. All right I uh see I'm kind of having to navigate a bunch of kegs. Got some Ninja Warrior going on in here? Um, a lot by just observing. So look at how dirty the fan blades are. Like extremely dirty. They're leaving the door open. Totally leaving the door open. so got it turned off. We're gonna get it defrosted while I'm working on the evaporator. I have the blades and the fan guards soaking in. Degreaser We'll just push them out of the way, so that way it's a little bit easier to clean them when we're all done. So the ice is, uh, built up all the way to the evaporative fan motors. and obviously I don't want to get the evapor fan motors wet, but we are going to have to get them a little wet. Unfortunately because we're not going to be able to just let this sit for two days to defrost. Now another thing is I Always say this: You can tell a lot by the ice pattern. So if you look at the ice pattern, notice how it's rounded at the top and it's It's a hard packed ice, but it's rounded right here and then it tapers off towards the bottom. To me, what that means is that the built-in defrost controller has been trying to defrost it, but it can't. It's been consistently defrosting. notice the top of the coil so as the warm air is at the top of the box right and it's and the cold air is falling down, it's defrosting the top of the coil. But it can't completely do enough because this guy is not set up for hour-long defrost, right? It's probably only doing multiple defrosts at 20 minutes a day, so you can tell a lot by the ice. Now this is just my opinion. We'll see more once we we turn the system back on. but I Don't think there's going to be a refrigeration issue I Think that it's just been trying to defrost itself and more than likely someone left the door open and it just can't. You know defrost past that point because built-in defrost. Whether it be from a Defrost clock or from a Ke2 temp. Plus, defrost controller is not set up to melt ice from someone leaving a door open. Or you know something like that, It's that's not what it's for. it's meant to do just normal. Frost That builds up because the coil temperature itself. Even though this is a medium temperature box, it's only maintaining 35 degrees. The coil temperature is going to be somewhere between 20 and 25 degrees. so you're naturally going to have Frost accumulation. But if someone leaves a door open, which is what I think happened, that Frost accumulation eventually is going to turn into ice and I think that's what happened here. So I'm going to be very careful. defrostiness using my wand. Okay, everybody asked me where do I get this wand. It's an orbit one you get it from Lowe's on the guardian section. Okay, so we're just letting the air purge out of the lines right now. Once that happens, then we should have a steady flow Here We go here. We go Steady flow water. You can control it with this knob right here. You can also put it on the Mist setting if you need to and we're just slowly going to defrost around the motor. I eventually want to get the motors out completely. but I gotta defrost around them to be able to do that. So first, it wasn't draining. So what I did was I took my wand and focused the Jet right where the drain's at because the ice was just that thick. Also, put down some pans because even though this isn't a walk-in freezer, I still don't want to get water on the floor if I don't have to so just taking our time. but now I got the drain clear and then I can continue on with defrosting the coil. This is a time-consuming process just a little bit at a time. But in the meantime I wonder why the walk-in coolers iced up? Because if they're propping open the walk-in freezer door to do inventory counts and stuff, guaranteed they're doing it to the walk-in cooler door too. Frustrating, right? But whatever. All right, keep going with this and then we'll talk with management when we're all done. So if we look at the ice that's falling off, you can see how it's rounded. Now that's big like that because I was defrosting it. but you can see the thickness and how it's rounded. Again, that's an indication that this has been iced up for a while and it's been trying to defrost and the water's been. the warm air at the top has been defrosting the coil and then the condensation or the ice or the water as the ice is melting is dripping off and that's what's rounding it out at the bottom and it's hard packed. So I just got to defrost that I Got in here, got this all defrosted. so now we're gonna put it back together and then test all of its operations. All right. That light is awkward for the camera angle, but we are back on and running. fans are moving. Air Defrosted that side, Defrosted that side. We're gonna let it come down in temperature. I'll wipe down the coil a little bit more and I gotta clean up my hose, drain that out I wipe it down, roll it up, get all the water out of it, and then by then we'll jump on the roof and evaluate the condensing unit. So both condenser fan motors are running. The sight glass is going to be hard for you guys to see, but the sight glass is clear. I'm not feeling a need to put on gauges on this unit because uh I don't see any issue with the ice pattern or anything like that. What I'm going to do is go down and we're going to evaluate the uh temperature controller and uh, see what kind of a defrost strategy it has in it and stuff all right. now. that particular key to therm temp plus, defrost controller has the Wi-Fi service tool on it so the LDA so I can log in. Now this is not connected to the internet, so me showing this IP address is not going to do anybody any good. Okay, you have to be on site, all right. So we're back in here. I wouldn't hit save on that so we've got it set to 60 frost a day. defrost times about 15 minutes. I Don't really see any other issues there. we really don't have any alarms set don't need any, so we're just gonna, uh, tell them to keep an eye on it. But it's kind of nice when you have these uh, internet controlled devices because you can log in and see everything you know. Pretty cool. Another thing that I'm noticing is, check this out. The walk-in door is getting stuck open, but they also have a bungee right there that they're bungee and it open. So more than likely what's happened. Yeah, look down there, that's a spring and the spring is probably uh, compressed so much when they have it bungeed open that it's damaged the spring and not allowed it to shut. So every once in a while it shuts. but every once in a while it gets stuck open too. And those are Spring closing hinges. So we'll get them new hinges and a closure for this box also. and I saw them propping open the walk-in freezer door. So let's look back here and yep, we've got some ice filled up on the top of the coil. It doesn't seem like it's affecting the temperature yet, but I'm going to get them to create a work order for this and we'll do this on another day. You guys won't be able to see it, but I can see ice in here too, so we'll get that taken care of also. All right. So I'm back today. I Ordered new latch for this guy right here because every time they open the walk-in cooler door, this pops open because it's just worn out, the magnets all loose and see that actually goes into the walk-in cooler which is kind of insane. But so with them slamming the door, the manager says that he'll come in and sometimes this will be open all night like this. and then we're also going to put hinges on the walk-in cooler door too. It's old school Perlick boxes or beat down, but okay, so it's got a latch now that actually grabs and you know I'm pulling on it. it's not opening anymore so that's good. Now let's get onto the walk-in door hinges. All right. Not too difficult, new hinges and a closure and the door when you let it go. it actually shuts on its own now and doesn't get stuck open so all is well. Coil is not iced up. It's been about two days since I was your last time. I Literally melt ice for a living. That is my job. I I go around melting ice on a daily. It seems like that's what we do all the time. but even though you know, it seems like oh my gosh, it's the same thing every single time. You know when you start doing it a lot and I'm sure many of you guys do it just as much as I do, but you know I've done it so many times. Where you're melting ice on evaporative coils, you start to notice patterns. You start to notice trends like the way that the ice is forming and I come up with theories and you know for the most part I can walk up to a lot of Frozen Up systems and you can say okay, this has been running too long or doors are being left open or this is a refrigerator issue. you can start to notice little different patterns. So even though it seems like you're just doing the same thing over and over again, just pay attention. You know, look at your surroundings and don't just assume right. I saw them leaving the doors open but I didn't leave it at that. Okay, then you start thinking okay, if they're propping the doors open, what are the ramifications of that in this situation? Because they bungee the walk-in cooler door open so much they've actually permanently compressed the door closing Springs inside the Spring closing hinges and they no longer have the oomph that they should to close the door all the time. If you're ever trying to test a door, always, just let it go about two inches before it's closed. That's the true test of Spring Closing hinges or self-closing doors is about two inches before and then if you can go to if it's like reaching coolers and stuff, slam one door if it has multiples and see if another door pops open and stays open. Okay, so in this situation, we looked at the walk-in cooler door. they had several other doors on this walk and it's a weird situation. And then we went into the bar area and we noticed that they have a connected reaching coil or a reaching cooler and that door had been popping open too. So we replaced the the latch on the region cooler door and then we also replaced the hinges and the door closure on the walk-in cooler. Now, Uh, other than that, just going through, it was pretty cookie cutter. I Didn't see a reason to put my refrigeration gauges on the system. It has now been I don't know about six weeks, maybe four weeks since I filmed this. No other issues, everything's been good. One thing however, is when you saw me navigating the temperature controller and that does have a key to therm 10 plus defrost controller and it has the L I think it's called the LDA and it just basically uh creates a Wi-Fi signal and allows you to connect with your phone while on site. Okay, and that's an important thing. I Get so many comments from people saying you're showing you know the the um what do you want to call it the URL or whatever you know and people are going to be able or not the URL but whatever it is I can't think of the name of it but I'm showing the you know if someone had it they'd be able to log in remotely and connect to the system. No, that's not the case. Okay This uses um the uh gosh darn it. what do you call that I Can't think of what it's called but you guys are probably screaming at me figuring it out. But anyways, this uses uh, that's how you access it locally is just typing in the URL Okay, it does not. It is not connected to the internet, It does not have the ability to well I shouldn't say that you can connect it to the internet if you want to. You have to connect it to a wireless router and then you can log in remotely but we do not have it set up that way. So you have to be on site. You have to have the password of which I have changed. It is not just the cookie cutter password that's in there. so you have to have the password and then you can log into it. So nobody's gonna get in here and remotely access this system. It's just not gonna happen. Okay So keep that in mind because a lot of people are like oh my gosh, you know, no that's not the case. But regardless, when I first logged into the controller i s it showed that I was having a communication problem. Now I didn't get footage of this but what actually happened was for some reason the little LDA that creates the Wi-Fi signal that's connected to the controller. it was Frozen So I actually had to go on top of the box which is where I have it placed and unplug it and then plug it back in. basically. and once it did that, it allowed me the access to remotely access it and then be able to go through there. Now the only thing that this saves me really is from having to navigate the controller from the buttons. and one thing I will say is that ketotherm uh controllers. They have their Evap Efficiency controllers, rack controllers, all that different stuff I have no affiliation with them but I do like their controllers, but their user interface on their controllers is silly. it's just difficult. Now on the temp plus defrost controller. Like this one, there's so few parameters that it's not a big deal, but if you're ever trying to access any Evap Efficiency controller from the the user interface on the controller itself and there's so many parameters it's annoying. And the my eyes, they just have such a hard time. So that's one thing that ketotherm. If you guys are listening or watching this, fix that, that is ridiculous. And another thing, Ketotherm. Uh I Strongly suggest if you guys, anybody knows people at Ketotherm anybody you know, whatever anybody watches these, share this information with them. Tag it so they can see this. make all your controllers bluetooth enabled. like I Know that you guys made the technology and you're trying to ride the wave of all the money you've invested in it. But come on, technology has evolved. It's time to step it up. You guys make an amazing product, make it Bluetooth compatible to where we don't have to connect the silly LDA thing to it. I Mean realistically, you guys you guys out there, Uh, okay at Key to therm you guys promote your product. like being able to connect these controllers to every one of the reaching coolers which does seem like a cool idea. Can you imagine if you had one of these 10 plus Defrost controllers connected on every reach and control or reaching cooler and you could access this. access them all from you know, a web portal like I just did in this video and be able to see everything. That sounds great, right? But in order to use the LDA you have to have a hardwired connection going down using thermostat wire so that that just doesn't seem practical. for to have these controllers connected to the dashboard and have thermostat wire are going to every single box that's on Wheels like it just doesn't make sense. But anyways I'm going off on a tangent key to therm. Get on it man! you guys make a great product and you can make it even better. If they're all just Bluetooth connected, that'd be this this easiest way to make your your product even better. Okay, but regardless I reset the little LDA thing I was able to log in and access I Didn't see any problems with defrost or anything like that. Everything else was cool. so I didn't just stop at the Frozen up coil I didn't just stop when I saw that they were propping the doors open I looked further I found door hinges that weren't closing. Why were they closing? More than likely because they bungee the door open. You know, so big picture diagnoses, right? That's what I'm always preaching. Uh, Last but not least, I did send another technician out a couple days after the filming of this video and he defrosted that little bit of ice on the walk-in freezer too. So all is well I Really appreciate y'all If you haven't already, please consider subscribing to the channel a couple different ways. You guys can help support the channel. The only trouble I see with Bluetooth (or Wi-Fi) between different controllers is that of being in a fairly effective Faraday cage (the metal walls of the box, especially as they are likely electrically grounded, even if only incidentally.) I do find it interesting that the URLs on your tablet suggest that the Modbus protocol is being used internally. They really should change to a display with more capability.

One issue with wireless transmitters, and bluetooth is just a short ranged wireless transmitter, is that they sometimes get glitchy when really cold.
