You always need to double check and don't rush thru the diagnosis, this was a great example of how you can make a simple mistake.

Working on a carrier, uh, split system here. It's a 15 ton, two, 7, and 1/2 ton compressors. And check this out. I'm connected to ground right there.

We're grounded on all three legs of this compressor and all three legs of this compressor. But that's not actually true. Carrier uses single P or uh, double pull contactors on three-phase systems. So check this out.

Pulled the wires off. We're not grounded anymore. We're only grounded on this one. Okay, why it's so important not to reset circuit breakers when you have a trip circuit breaker until a technician can fully diagnose it.

We could still have damage to this compressor, but this is our culprit. This guy is grounded. This one is still good. It was just back feeding through the single leg that they shared in common that was powered 24/7.

What I do when a break trips is reset it ONCE, just in case there was a spike or something. If it happens again there is clearly something wrong. I can’t believe there are people that will just ignore the most obvious warning signs.

it's important to always understand what system you're working on.

Checks ohms with wires on. Kk

Awful cheap to put 2 pole on a 3 phase system, if any leg grounds out, it will backfeed through the windings. Are you in Orleans ?

I always pull the wires from the terminals to make a final diagnosis on compressor windings. Using a a meter that reads high resistance (50-60 MehgOhms) can cause false readings too.
I've chased my tail several times. 🫤

    Sometimes incompetence damages the unit

When I’m doubt, always isolate the compressor from the wire leads. Also if you ever use a megohmeter on a VFD or inverter. Always isolate the compressor, then test it
