So much of the information on the internet and being given out on air quality is incorrect! Mole in the air handler, particulates in the air, and viruses all covered!
In today's video, we go over some of that misinformation.

Foreign. hey guys! Uh I have had more technical difficulties today than I ever have trying to get this stream going, but um, it's ultimately my fault I think just because I'm ignorant on how a lot of this stuff works, but I I wanted to do a video today talking about some of the misdiagnosed things in the heating and air industry and I am going to eventually do that video, but something came across my radar today that I thought was a way more pertinent issue, way more um, urgent and thought I would do a live video on this instead because I'm helping a lady and the first thing that jumped out at me is I was talking to a an actual manufacturer, a company that makes indoor air quality products and this lady that worked for the company made a comment to me that led me to believe that you know a lot of folks think that you know there's so many different different indoor air quality products and they think that they all you know I think most people understand that there's a difference between say, a UV light and an air filter or an ionizer. you know? So they they understand that they're different products, but maybe what they don't understand is they don't that they accomplish different things right? So a lot of people think you know there's these different products, but they all they all. They're different ways to skin a cat, but they all go for the same goal, right? They're all they're all trying to. um, they're all trying to just get the air cleaner right. and I think what I'm noticing is, Well, the main thing is that's not true. Um, the main. The thing is that a lot of these products on the market and this is not a video where I'm going to talk about some are good and some are bad or anything like that. it's just understanding that each one does something differently. and because of that, when I have a customer that is trying to accomplish a certain goal. um, and that plays a role in which product that I'm going to recommend to them. And so I was talking. So let me let me just say this I was talking to this lady. She says she was working for this company that makes these air filters that are supposed to be amazing. they're supposed to be the best air filters out there, that they're better than anyone else that they. you know they sell them in hospitals and you know they're just such Amazing air filters and we were talking about a couple different things. I'm working with a homeowner that wants this particular air filter and the lady I was talking to said well uh well I said to her she wants a price to install your air filter but she also wants a price for me to install a UV light. And what the girl said to me, well if she installs our air filter, there will be no need for a UV light Now I'm sure there's some heating and air guys out there that might disagree with me, but I can tell you I disagree with that statement. Um, and the reason is they and a UV light and an air filter do two totally different things. obviously an air filter filters the air and a UV light depending on what kind you get and what it does and the company and whatever. But ultimately what it does is it shines, this ultraviolet light and anything that light hits, it, disinfects or it cleans. Uh, they make UV lights for all kinds of stuff. I think when it first came out they were kind of considered snake oil I I think I was on that train when they first ever came out. The guy that I learned under probably this to this day was kind of that. Old Timer tight. he probably to this day thinks they're snake oil. Um, it wasn't until I installed a few of them and saw an evaporator coil before and after and I got to see that UV light. you know we did a a maintenance on their system and we installed a UV light and saw this black moldy, cold, you know, dirty coil and then I'd go back six months later and it was shiny as a nickel I was like whoa, there's something to these things. So the girl says if you install our air filter you don't need the UV light that told me automatically she doesn't understand what the UV lights do. Um, now am I saying that if you install a UV light, you don't need the air filter I'm not saying that obviously UV light doesn't filter the air, but I'm also saying that if you install the filter, it doesn't necessarily mean you don't need a UV light. You know. So again, it depends on what the customer's goal is. If the customer says to me, hey, I have someone in my home, they have asthma, they have breathing issues, They have all these different things depending on the situation. The answer might be multiple air quality products because they all do something different. So getting back to that, uh, that scenario where the girl says, well, if she installs our air filter, you don't need the UV light. My question now I Didn't say this to her because you know she's just doing her job and she's just you know, getting by or what. You know she's just at work and saying what she thinks she's supposed to say. But my question to her would be if I didn't want to be confrontational I'm a I'm an internet tough guy Instead of saying it to her face I came on YouTube Live to say it right. She'll probably never see this. Um, but my question to her would be, so if you install her filter this great filter, you install it on the return duct. So now you've got this filter. you've got air coming through the ducts there. It's not filtered, it goes through the filter, it comes out of the filter. and now we've got filtered air that's going through the air handler or furnace if that air handler evaporator coil starts to develop mold. Okay so let's say that you know the water isn't draining from the drain pan very well. So water's just kind of sitting there and you know all the reasons we would put a UV light in. It's starting to give that stagnant mold smell or stagnant water smell and you know it's got all the whatever Gunk stuff's starting to kind of grow or or accumulate. All the things that that that UV light would eliminate or inhibit. My question to her would be, well, the air that's now been filtered by your filter and it goes through the air handler and it's going through all of that stuff without the UV light. What's your filter doing? All that problem is after your filter. Now you could make the argument that okay, it's filtered, it goes through the air handler, it goes back into the house and then it comes back through the return right and you got this. Loop and it's filtering as it goes through there. Well I I Can't disagree with that. but the the thing is, it doesn't inhibit the mold growth. For example, if there was mold in an air handler, installing a Merv 16 air filter before that air handler in my opinion, now you again there's going to be you know, experts or heating and air guys out there. that might disagree with me, but in my opinion it does not eliminate that issue. It does not get rid of the need to have say a UV light or an ionizer or whatever product you're installing to try to help with that. So uh I think that's the main thing that just really jumped out at me today as I was talking to her I've got again this lady that she's got a husband that she said is you know has dealt with some issues from things in the past and she is under the impression that you know buying this air filter is going to fix all of her problems and maybe it will fix the problems in her home. but um, you know because it obviously filtering there is not a bad thing, right? You know it's having a better filter as long as it's not adding too much static pressure. That's that's one of the issues that we see a lot of air filters today. You know if they are a super great air filter uh that removes all these particulates from the air, it's almost like you've got. You know if you imagine like a mesh screen and if you got a cheap filter the the holes might be that big but then you buy a more expensive filter so the holes are only that big. You know and you've got air passing through there. um the you know the the they can only do but so much I Guess is The point is is my point and you know so uh, it depends on what you're trying to accomplish it. It depends on your issue or your what you you know and so on. So if you have someone with breathing issues in your house I Think that you know the answer to a question like that might be you know more than one product trying to accomplish that. Now the cool thing is, there are products out there that accomplish more than one thing. There are air cleaners that also ionize the air. or there are electrostatic filters that also have a ultraviolet light emitting from it. You know, whatever. But Ultimately, you know this girl from this company saying that the installing their filter again I Don't care how good the filter is I don't I don't care I don't care how clean the air is coming out past the filter on the this, the load side or the supply side of that filter. Um, you know it. It's irrelevant at that point. it just means you're giving that mold some clean air to breathe. So uh, filters, all they do is remove particulates from the air. That's all they do. Now if those particulates happen to be, you know air pollution of some kind mold or some sort of other contaminant that you should not be breathing. Well, Great. But that's still all they do. And this is not me hating on filters. I Think a great you know Merv 13 to 16 depending on your situation. Filter is great if you if it's installed right and it's not adding too much static pressure and choking the air to the system and all that. Of course you know filtering that air is a good thing. that's not. That's not the point here. I I Think that a lot of these products on the market should be almost like Bare Minimum. I've heard of companies that will say well, look, if you want to accomplish a pro, you know, if you want to fix the air in your home, then you know you've got to buy a package. You know that we don't do that at Griffin Air. Uh, but I've heard of companies saying you know you, we're We have our silver package and our gold package or whatever. and each of those packages offering more than one product. You know? product. Uh, don't you love Lab video. You all get to see me say words weird. Um, so I think that's the main thing I'm going to go through a few other products here I'm trying to trying to be more entertaining when you guys tune into a live video. Um, oh, you know I want to I Want to create value? I Want to? You know if you tuned in I want to say something valuable that you would get something out of it and which is why I wanted to talk about what I talked about but ultimately I think that a lot of times I'm just rambling. um I do have a couple websites I'm going to go to just real quick and touch on uh, some of the things they're saying and um I'm going to try to share this screen here. Bear with me. So I found this website. it's really it was honestly the first website that popped up when I just typed in air quality facts and so, uh, shout out to these guys. um, you know, using your website right now and I thought some of this stuff was uh, pertinent to this conversation. It starts out by saying you spend about 90 of your time indoors. that's probably uh, you know, could be higher or lower based on your lifestyle. uh, but it says at work, at school and at home, if you are like most people, you spend almost all of your time inside. This should be a major concern when you consider this and the fact and the next fact together. The next fact is the quality of indoor air can be two to five times or even up to 100 times more polluted than the worst outside air. And I've I've seen multiple studies on that particular fact right there. so what? I think that's interesting. They're saying where you spend the most amount of your time here is where is is where. Two to five times worse than the outside air. Worst out, worst outside air is where you're is what you're breathing and that I've been in some houses, you know that that number might even be higher. You know? Um, most people recognize the health concerns that outdoor air pollution poses, but few consider the exposure that poor indoor air quality has the same ill health effects. And I again I Think this that gets back to my whole point of doing this video too is not just understanding that the air you're breathing inside your home is unsafe to breathe at times, but understanding that, um, the way you get there, the way you, um, the you know the products you install or you're heating an air guy installs can affect this in one way, shape or form, but sometimes you know you're just putting a dent in the bucket. you know if if there's a and it kind of gets back to that What that girl was saying earlier where she said well, if you install our product, if you install our uh, heating and air um, filter then there's no need for these other products and it's just it's simply not true. I'll give you another example. What if that customer that she thinks that about? What if they have mold in their house So let's say they have a humidity issue. Which we're going to talk about humidity in a second because humidity plays a huge role in a lot of the air problems that we have indoors. But you know, let's say they have a humidity issue. They have mold growing in their house and then they install this filter that she's talking about again. I'm not hating on filters, but if you're not actually, uh, attacking the problem like I I think that there's solutions to problems like that's just my personality. Like if there's an issue and I need to fix it, there is a way of fixing it and then there's a way of masking it right. It's sort of like medicines today. Some medicines actually fix the issue. Some medicines just eliminate the pain, right? And so that's kind of the point here. Where if this lady, if this girl's saying, well, you know if if you install our filter, then you don't need to worry about eliminating the mold. Well, obviously that's not true, you know? Uh I don't care how good your filter is, if you have mold in your house, you could be breathing in that mold. You know you haven't eliminated the issue. You haven't fixed the humidity problem, right? And so you know that's that's the biggie here. So I you might be saying as you're sitting here listening to me jabber on well Josh What is the solution here? What it? You know what? What is the best product? What should I be looking at and unfortunately I don't have an answer for you that each product does something different, each product you know and that's maybe something you should be looking at is what do those products do? What? What is wrong in my home and what do I need to fix to get the end result? Maybe you don't know the answer to that. Maybe you need to have an air quality test done. Um, a lot of heating and air guys can do those today. Now they may do the air quality tests and maybe their experience doesn't allow them to 100 looking look at the results they got from the tests and say I think these products are best I think that's the other problem with a lot of air quality issues today is you've got guys that are just selling products. You know they'll just say well you know I think you need this or that and then they don't really know what the end result is they they assume they do. They say well I installed this. So This should take care of your issue. but unless they actually either a know what the issue is or B if they know what it is know how to fix it, then they'll They may fall short for you right? So again, the answer becomes what do you do if you're the homeowner? Well I I don't have an answer for you because every house is different. Every situation is different. So getting back to our little list here. Um, the EPA is ranked Indoor Air Pollution among the top five environmental dangers. The EPA has recognized that poor indoor air pollution is a very rare problem and ranked it is a oh sorry is a very real problem and ranked it among the top of the environmental dangers facing the public. Yeah, I mean I I have to agree with that. I mean I don't know what their other four are if they said that's the top five environmental dangers, but I'd love to know. but um, if they're saying that I can tell you this and and maybe this uh, article goes into this later. But I can tell you that I have heard studies done where they have figured out that diseases or illnesses correlate directly to the air that people have been breathing, whether it's in their home or somewhere else. Um, that they have actually proven that certain diseases or illnesses were caused 100 percent by the air they were breathing. and um, or maybe not 100. Maybe there's been other illnesses where it wasn't 100, but maybe it correlating with something else. You know the the the two together. you know the bad air quality and whatever, but it's uh, it's a I Think that it's important, you know it is a real problem and unfortunately, um, getting the you know the help you need or the problem you need fixed is sometimes, uh, part of the Uh challenge. There has been an alarming increase in the number of children with severe allergies and Asthma the amount of children and young adults with severe allergies and Asthma continues to climb every year. This has been linked to increasingly poor indoor air quality I Don't really have anything to add to that other than I do The The main thing that a lot of folks have pointed to today is if you were to go back a hundred years or even further, houses could breathe a whole lot better than they can now. and because of that, it creates a whole nother set of issues. you know? So if we were talking about air quality products 20 years ago before houses started getting Tighter and Tighter and Tighter Uh, you know, 30 40 years ago, a lot of the air quality products, you may have only needed one or two, whereas today you may need more than that. You may need three or four air quality products to really get that air as clean as it can be or as clean as the outside air and some of those could be. We're going to talk in just a second. I Know, you know, before you get impatient with me, we're going to talk about some of the products that are out there that you can improve the air quality, but one of those being if you live in a tight house like that is bringing in that fresh air. You know some sort of ventilation allergies, asthma, lung cancer, and heart problems have all been linked to poor air quality. The American Heart Association has linked poor air quality to heart problems while the American Lung Association lists it as the leading cause for lung cancer. Remember years ago, uh, my mom was talking about a lady that we know how she got lung cancer. She did everything right her entire life. She you know ate the right things, she didn't smoke, she didn't live with someone that smoked and she still ended up getting lung cancer and I was just starting out in the heating and air I Shouldn't say starting out but you know it was probably a good you know while while ago I was still learning but I remember saying to her that because Mom said you know she did everything right and here she is, she's still got lung cancer I remember telling Mom Well, you know, maybe it's something in the house, Maybe maybe it's something they've been breathing and she didn't even know it could have caused that could be in the house. could have been where she was working, could have been wherever. Um, but that's an interesting statistic right there that you know that the American Lung Association lists it as the leading cause for lung cancer not smoking? Not, You know, not a lot of the other things that we see warnings on it looked. you know. according to this they're saying that it's the leading calls that that you know. Air Quality Poor air quality is the leading cause for lung cancer. That's interesting. Sources for indoor air pollution are all around you. Studies conducted by the EPA have shown that indoor air pollution is a problem for all types of homes, whether in a dense urban city or a rural. Town Some of the sources include combustion sources such as gas oil, kerosene and wood stoves or fireplaces, tobacco smoke. Uh, before I go to the next one. I I Have a friend of mine he just had. He bought a carbon monoxide detector last night and he called me because it was going off. Luckily we determined that it was not carbon monoxide making his his alarm go off. that it was uh, actually it was a tamper alarm there. so if children mess with it that that's ended. It ended up being that that's all it was. But I do want to say real quick that never mind air quality, never mind air pollution. If we're talking about carbon monoxide alone I Mean this is not me. This is not me. Just oh, you know I know something you can Google This There are hundreds if not thousands of people every year that die from carbon monoxide. They go to sleep. It's a silent, uh, odorless killer. They'll go to sleep and they never wake up. So if you if you see this, hopefully you take this serious enough. I Don't care if you buy a UV light for your system I Really? I mean I don't um I think you should. but I don't care I do think if you have some sort of gas burning Appliance in your home furnace, gas logs, gas of any kind, gas water heater. you know, tankless water heater or tank. any sort of burnt fossil fuel burning Appliance in your home right now. Do Not go to sleep tonight Without going to get a carbon monoxide detector tonight. I Wouldn't go to sleep tonight without it I Don't care if you're using it or not. Don't go to sleep tonight without it I'm not asking you to buy it from my website. It's not me trying to sell you something, it's me trying to explain how dangerous that stuff is and and how you know. I Remember my wife and I just a couple years ago we were watching a Dateline episode and they had this um, they had this uh, hotel room that they thought was haunted. So these people kept staying in this Han this this hotel room and they thought it was haunted and they were dying that they had had like you know, a handful of people die and finally a girls volleyball team had come into town to play a volleyball game. They were the visiting team and they stayed at this hotel that night and they stayed in this room and two of the four girls in the room died and two of them were sick. They were nauseous, They took them, they took them to the hospital puking and all that and they figured out that the reason, um, that these people were dying was carbon monoxide, that there was a boiler beneath that room that the flu vent went beneath and the flu vent that just had just enough to where there was a joint and it just wasn't perfectly sealed and carbon monoxide was coming up into that hotel room. And so anyway, the point of all this is uh again, Go. Don't go to sleep tonight without a carbon monoxide detector. If you do have a carbon monoxide detector, hopefully you see this video and I my call to you is uh, don't go uh to sleep tonight without changing the batteries. Okay, all right. Uh, so some of the sources for indoor air pollution also include building materials, insulation, carpet, Cabinetry pressed wood products. Uh, that's a big one. Uh, as time has gone on, they they've realized that materials we used to use years ago uh, were unsafe to be breathing. You know? So you've got these guys that a the guy that installed it and then B now it's in your home and you're breathing it. Um, but I Also believe that there are products even still today that we're not even aware of it yet, that it's not necessarily okay for us to have it in our homes that that particular you know, carpeting or glue that they use for something or another or whatever. um, is not okay for us to have in our homes and breathing. and um, you know we will find out eventually, right? Chemical products, cleaning products, personal care products, glues and pastes I Have to call it my wife on that one. The personal care products. uh, she will spray stuff in our house, in her, in our bathroom and I just you know I whine like nobody's business I'm like will you close the door? turn on the exhaust fan. you know you I don't know what you're spraying in there. um outdoor Solutions such as radon, pesticides, pollen, outdoor air pollution. So these are some of those things outside that are making it into your home. Um, there are things that you can do to eliminate a lot of these. Uh We've we I Just did a video not long ago on encapsulating your crawl space. Uh I will say not all CR crawl space encapsulations are created equal which is why we at Griffin air. Uh, now do it because there's nobody in our area that does them correctly. Um, from what I can tell, a lot of them are cutting. Corners They're using products like spray foam and things like that. Um, to do you know crawl space encapsulations And and they're not an actual, properly sealed crawl space encapsulation not done correctly? Um, that's a whole other topic. but I did a video on that. um, finally, pet dander dust, mites, mold, and viruses. so you can probably go on and on with that. You know things that you're breathing in your home that are just you know, simply in the air and you're breathing it and you shouldn't be. right. Due to the abnormally warm winter this year, the pollen counts are 800 800 percent higher or eight times greater than the normal and will find their way into your home. So you know pollen outside. I I can tell you every spring it's one of the allergies that I have that I'll have to get on some Allegra call out, you know, shout out to Allegra I I've used some of the other, um, allergy medicines and that's the one that seems to work best for me. It's funny how God made us all different. how Allegra doesn't work for one person, but they got to use say Claritin Claritin doesn't Does you know Zyrtec and Claritin don't do anything for me? Uh, you inhale approximately 15 000 or more quarts of air per day. Wow, You know fifteen thousand or more air courts or more quarts of the air per day? You likely understand the health benefits of clean water, of which you consume about two quarts per day. yet most people are unaware of or ignore the importance of breathing in clean air as well. Don't ignore your home's real air. Don't ignore your homes very real indoor air quality problem. Cool today, blah blah blah. So this company's uh I'll go ahead and plug them. They let me use their website Cool Today offers a variety of products designed to improve your air qualities and help you breathe easier. Contact us today at 800-226-2636 so they didn't pay me to do this. Uh I think that this is just a regular A-trac company in California Yeah, so shout out to those guys I did use your blog to do this little video. um but I thought that was good and I do have another thank you thing we're going to run through because I told you guys we're going to talk about some of the indoor air quality products out there and what exactly they do. Let's uh, let's start out by talking about whole um air. So there's a bunch of there's a couple different brands out there that do products like this. A lot of the big manufacturers like here's Bryant you know Bryant Carrier Train America Standard all those Daikin they all have their own little uh brand if you will that they install or they a lot of times it's just another company and then they're just sticking their sticker on it in some way, shape or form. But Ultimately, when I'm talking about these air filters now the the company that this lady was talking about was called IQ Air and we'll get to them in just a second. But this is kind of what I'm talking about. If you guys see this, this is the uh, you know this is an April layer version of a whole house home filter. I like April layer that's what we install. Uh, one of the reasons I like them is unlike some of the other uh, whole house home filters out there. the static pressures for a lot of the April air stuff now again April April every time I talk about a brand on our YouTube channel guys are like oh uh, they must have paid you to say that uh, no one currently has paid me anything to say anything. I've had companies approach me um to get me to say things and I turned them down. but I have not had anyone pay me to say anything. So if you hear me endorse a product or endorse a certain Heating and Air brand during the making of this video, they did not pay me to say any of this. So again at Griffin Air, we like April Lair and again one of the reasons is not only do they have Merv 16 Murph 13 air filters that are a little, you know they're sort of like a disposable air filter on uh, steroids. but they don't restrict the air or add static pressure to that heating and air system causing it to have you know, causing it to work harder and have more breakdowns. if nothing else. that's hard on the indoor fan mode indoor fan motor but uh you know I've done other videos on April Air how you can cut the media and stretch it out and all the surface area that they have on their filters. that's uh I think where this this company that this lady was talking about IQ air let me pull them up real quick IQ air. um they looks like they have, uh they're all over the place they ever I Gotta say their website's pretty impressive I like this map they've got going here and some of the other things but um the the main thing that you know I I can and I told the lady this I'm concerned about is the static pressure that it's going to add static that it's going to add to the the system and causing that uh indoor unit to work a whole lot harder. um let me see if I can find it's hard to find on their website the exact here we go shop home, see a lot of that, a lot of their um their websites based on a lot of these products like the floor mounts. let's see Whole House System here we go. so if you if you see the difference here I I uh I'm not sure exactly how the air passes through this unit I can tell you, these units are a little pricey. Um, but maybe they're worth it if they're as good as they say they are. It's almost like they've taken the concept of reverse osmosis in. Water Systems Where you know reverse osmosis is like what is it like three times the amount of uh, filtering or filtration that a just a regular filter would be or something like that? Well you know when you're adding layers of filters like that like we're seeing here, that is probably the idea. So it goes through the first filter and it removes. you know, large particles, particulates and then it gets to the next one and and as it continues to go through those filters you start to see, um, you know the air gets cleaner and cleaner and cleaner. April April Layer filters and contrast don't do that. So the problem with that it would be as especially as that first filter gets dirtier and dirtier. Uh, it can. It just makes the static go up up up you know, makes that system have to work harder and harder and never mind the abuse the system takes. Just the simple efficiency goes down drastically. You know if you no longer have a certain amount of Cfms going through that system, you um, you you know you don't have a certain amount of airflow, You know your coil can start to freeze up. Oh and you could, um, you know, have issues like that. Where the the system is just not as efficient as it would be with the amount of air that should be passing across that coil. For example, now if you have an inverter system or something like that, it can you know, uh, adjust? you know. But if you have a regular old single stage system for example, either on or off, which is what I would say a lot of folks probably most folks. In America still currently have uh, or even a multi. you know, like a two-stage or three-stage system. Even if it's in just the first stage, you still don't have the quite, you know air being passed through there because of the Restriction Now um, so you know I haven't laid hands on their unit yet. We'll see what happens. I Know that this particular customer really likes their product and we will see you know, when that time comes, how that goes. So that's whole house home filters. Uh, at least that's what we call them. four inch media filters with the you know, the slide out media and there's different versions of that. That's how April Lair does theirs. Some brands have something more like this. you know where the they? It's an actual like car, almost like a disposable filter. It's got a cardboard and capsule you know casing that holds that media. Um, is one better than the other, you know I Don't know. As long as the static is, you know. not too high. Um, here's one you know. here's carrier's version. So anyway, you kind of get the point and that is something that you know. getting back to the you know, the Aprilaire ones that we we usually. we probably sell several dozen of these. um, a year, if not more. you know I'm just throwing a number out there. We don't? You know we don't. We don't install them in every home, but a lot of our installs, you know we'll We'll do an April layer and that's in addition. Here's the here's a great picture. If you see this picture. this is how the media slides in and out. You know? So I think that they're great for what they are and they don't add as much static as a lot of the other HEPA filters or some of the other filters out there. and you know that's part of the appeal there because of all the surface area there. It's the surface area. As I've said in other videos, that is is the main advantage to you know how they do it. Um, let's talk real quick about UV lights. Again, most UV lights if it's just a simple bulb. Let's see, let's do an HVAC UV light if you got a simple bulb I Like, look at this picture now. I'm not in love with this picture because this particular one is on the supply side of the coil I like it. bare minimum for there to be one on the return side, but in a lot of systems if you put one on the return side. but depending on how it's set up, you can't um, you can't then have it shining on the drain pan too. So if you get any microbial growth in the drain pan, well if the light can't reach it then you know it can't clean it. But bare minimum. definitely the return side. That's where a lot of your you know Gunk and things like that will start to Gunk as a scientific word for me today. Um, but Gunk starts to collect on that coil and uh so UV lights I love them again I I Had that customer a few years ago that he he had one of those old Rheem I call them M coils because the coil kind of go you know, up and down. Unlike just a simple a coil, it's like an A coil times three and so he's got all these dips and it didn't matter how hard I cleaned it, you know I couldn't get to every tiny little nook and cranny even if I would have cut the evaporator coil loose, taking it outside sprayed it down I I It's my belief that I would not have gotten every nook and cranny and we put that UV light in and even the customer himself said I you know I used to be real congested no more and that one particular job to this day it changed my entire thought process on UV lights. You know I became a I became a believer. but you've got these other products like this is a picture of the APCO Uh, but there's It's not just the app code. there's a bunch of different brands out there that make a product similar to this right here. Where the Air's got to pass through some sort of cell there sells. You know something that it's Gotta pass air through and then that's got a UV light? Uh, I See some of the other brands where it's almost like the UV lights in the middle of all of these, but you know it. It actually can clean the air as it passes through there. but again, it's not filtering the air. you know like an air filter would anyway. So you know UV lights serve their purpose and I I I Personally think this is just me. I would say 85 if not 90 of HVAC systems Across America should have a UV light in there. The other thing that concerned me because I don't know much about this company that this lady wants me to use is I could tell you years ago companies like Aprilaire were struggling with UV lights because the lights were literally destroying the filters, they were making them real brittle and they were like falling apart inside the system and they eventually remedied that issue. Whereas you know this company I I Don't know. Maybe that's why that girl told me oh if you do our filter, you won't have to do a UV light. You know, maybe that's why she said that I don't think so but uh you know, maybe she doesn't want me putting it in there because of the issues that they you know could then have. um let's see funded Futures Trading Hello y'all from New York What's up New York Um so that's UV Lights. Let's talk real quick. So we've done air filters. we've done UV Lights. Let's do uh like an Eyewave Ionizer Now Eyewaves. Um, you know a brand. There's different uh, ionizers out there. We do a lot of the eyewaves, which is why I'm picking this one. but um, as you can see in this picture right here, it's basically got these little um I'm gonna make myself sound dumb, but whatever, these diodes or whatever these little deals here they get dirty. That's why this flippers here and it spins and cleans them periodically. Um but it ionizes the air and some of these systems will you know depending on how it works and how it ionizes the air, they some of them can create ozone. I've been told the eyewave I've been told does not so it does not create ozone and I've seen you know their their uh YouTube video where they eliminate the smoke inside the you know they do the little glass tube and they put the eye wave in there and the the smoke eliminates. Ultimately when it's ionizing the air there's a there's several things that it can do but uh ultimately when it's ionizing the air it can make the um the dust heavier and so it'll the filter will catch it whereas you know if it if it's just floating through the air um it will, uh not it'll just float through the air. we'll never make it there. I've had I've actually heard now none of my customers I've heard other people say that they installed an ionizer and it felt almost like they're at least for a while. Their house was a little dustier and it's like yeah, because you were breathing that air. you know that that dust is now falling out of the air because it's now being ionized. but uh this is a a a picture of some of the viruses and things like that that ionizers can kill. um I don't want to make a claim that you know it makes me end up in a courtroom. So I'm not a scientist I'm not even going to make a claim but I've been told that some products, some products can kill the Coronavirus So again, I'm not going to make any claims in this video I think they actually may have gotten in trouble for that. Uh, all it takes is for you to say one thing. use one word wrong or one verb is wrong and you can be in trouble. But um, ultimately, the thing I like about ionizers especially and whether it's the eyewave or some other brand. The thing I really like about ionizers is again, a UV light is only going to kill what it can touch. An air filter is only going to filter the air that can pass through there, whereas an ionizer can kind of get out. You know it can charge the uh, the electrons in the air throughout your home. you know, so it's it's. almost kind of gets out there and uh takes care of issues outside of the heating and air system itself if that makes sense. Um, so that's that's ionizers. They also can inhibit mold, so you know I Had a guy try to explain to me again I'm you know I'm sure somebody will see this video and talk about how dumb I am I don't care I am dumb. uh. but basically it when it ionizes the air, it removes something in the air and uh, at the hydrogen atom or whatever that allows mold to grow and when it does that, it kills the mold. um again. I'm not making any assumptions or any uh claims with this video. I'm you know, just telling you the way ionizers work Google It you know, look it up. Uh, ionizers are a big thing in hospitals that they're putting a you know the and now I'm just looking at one, that's you know, residential here. Uh, but they install them in hospitals now. Especially with the whole pandemic. That was a big thing. I Remember, the schools and one of the neighboring counties were accepting bids around us just to install ionizers throughout the school and the heating and air systems to help. Uh, you know, with the coronavirus spreading? Um, that's a whole other topic though. Uh, you know. Anyway, the county and them getting uh, proposals and the money and all that. uh, you got to know somebody. Let's put it that way, somebody was buying somebody lunch. So anyway, that's ionizers. Let next, let's talk about um, before we get to humidity, let's just real quick talk about ventilation. If you do have a house, especially a newer house, uh, to meet code, a lot of them are having to add some sort of ventilation. uh, ventilation. and so if you do, ha. I Would definitely have this installed by a pro, but there are ventilation systems out there depending on your home. Uh, it may play a role in which one you get or how big it needs to be. Um, but I Like for it to go through some sort of whether it's a dehumidifier or some sort of filtration. Um, that might sound like a no-brainer but there are ventilation systems out there that don't, uh, filter the air. at least not. um, not in the sense that we're talking here where it's going to pull in some outside fresh air, filter that air and dump it into the home. A lot of heating and air systems are built that way. Whereas you know there are ventilation systems out there, that let's just simply just pull air into the home. You know, whether it's doing you know, a fan in the Attic or however it's set up. Um, but this is a big thing. This is a way bigger thing today than it was. You know, 20 years ago or especially 50 years ago. You know, 50 years ago, if you just said you were pulling in some air from outside, uh, they probably would have said you're crazy because you know I'm trying. It's hard enough keeping this house warm and now you go pull in some cold air. Uh, you know. So this is a way bigger deal than it used to be. Um, and you know, putting that positive pressure that it brings into the house is also something that you have to consider when you're setting up your ductwork and all of that stuff. Um, when you're doing your heat load calculation and every you know there's so much to it. But ultimately, this is a way bigger need today than it was. You know, again years ago, because you you're having to bring in some fresh air, you're having to, uh, help get that tight home. You got this tight mason jar if you will. Mason jar of a home and this air that's just sitting in their stagnant air? Nothing. no fresh air. Bring it. Reminds me of um I grew up in the country and I remember people saying when they'd come out to see us they would say uh uh I love coming to the country from the city because of the fresh air I like to I like to breathe this fresh air and it's same. Same goes for your house. You know if you're that and what they were saying was a real thing. they were living in a city. they came out to the country and they were breathing in that fresh Mountain Air right? Same goes for your house. You know you're pulling out you need. you got to pull in some fresh air from outside because your house is so tight and and so on. So as you can see. As we've gone through this so far, we haven't even got to humidity yet and we have already covered several different products, all of them doing something different, all of them accomplishing a different task if you will. So I'm just going I'm just touching on a few. I'm not even talking about some of the you know products out there that eliminate multiple things that have a you know, a filter that also emits a UV light or also ionizes the air or an electrostatic filter. All these different things out there that can clean the air. Um I Well I won't say that and I'll I'll just say that everybody has an opinion. Uh, everybody thinks that whatever they're selling is the best and that's fine. You should think that if it's something you're selling. Um, you probably should be selling something you believe in something you think is the best, the best product that you can offer to your your customers and homeowners that are depending on you. So you know that's not a bad thing in all cases. Uh, but Somebody's gotta be right, right? You know somebody when they say I'm selling the best product out there, somebody's got to be right. You know, All right. Last thing I will talk about here is humidity and I want to show you something real quick here. This is something that we, uh we talk about a lot in the heating and air industry, especially if we're talking about indoor air quality. If you can see this, uh hopefully you can see this I'm kind of blowing blowing it up here. uh this is a So if you were to think of you know here's your uh humidity at the bottom here. So if you got zero percent or you know, dry air zero percent humidity up here to 100 percent relative humidity, there's a ideal range in your home. and that range this says 40 to 60 percent I've heard other people say other zones uh in Virginia that's that's about about right for us. You know it's especially with us being so close to the water. uh I care more about that six zero than I do the 4-0 I I'm always you know trying to get people below 60. is the the big number and if I can get them below 60 which is actually pretty tough in some houses, then um, you know then we're going to get in this range so we don't usually have to worry about the lower end where I'm at as much. But regardless of wherever you are, if if you see here, you know they've listed a few things, they're basically saying that you know if you are below 40 or you know you have, you're at risk for bacteria viruses, allergic, uh, asthma, allergic I don't know what rhinitis, respiratory infections, chemical, no, not chemical interaction, ozone production. Okay, so if you are below 40, you're at risk for those items and then if you're above 60, you're at risk for some of those items as well but also a few others bacteria viruses, fungi, mites, allergic, rhinitis, and Asthma and then also chemical interactions. So meaning if it's real humid in your house and I again, I'm gonna I probably spend more time up here in this area right because of where I'm located. Uh, ultimately you know we get customers. the big one for us to be honest with you. especially in the Southeast the further south you go, you know I know you. guys down in Florida You deal with this a lot. Um, and that's mold. You know mold is the big one for us. All these others are still big deals I mean obviously viruses based on what we've been through in the last few years is a big deal. but uh, when I'm looking at a real humid house I'm most a lot of times I'm concerned about mold I'm concerned I'm concerned about the mold that you know. not just that they're breathing, but molds being able to grow in certain areas of their house that they can't even see. and uh, here's another one of those charts. Let's see if it mentions any other items, it does not. So the main thing here is getting your you know getting your house in that sweet spot if you will of ideal humidity and there are ways to do that. But again, keep in mind we are not talking about cleaning the air here. we're not talking about filtering the air, just getting your house less humid if you got a house that's just hovering at you know, 70 or 80 percent all the time or or it's super dry in the winter and you live in an area where your your house unit are always. you know your your throat is kind of scratchy in the winter, especially after you wake up in the morning and you're you know you're just, uh, constantly getting colds and things like that. It's because your body, you know again. I'm not a scientist, but your body can't you know, filter out some of that stuff because it's so dry. the mucus and stuff, uh, in your throat, can't it? You know it's just it's not doing its job. and so you know we have customers that we do have humidity or humidifiers uh, installed in their home. especially in the winter time. But the big one for us again is in the summertime, getting that dehumidifier, getting that home, Getting that, you know that? Dan getting that humidity down so you don't have to worry about mold and things like that. Last thing I'll say is you know I I Feel like I've been doing a lot of rambling. If you do have a question, feel free to put that in the chat I will answer before I wrap up any questions that you guys have by putting that in there. But ultimately the reason I did this video is the If I could convey anything to a homeowner that's in the market for a heating and air system. The main thing I would convey is just understand that yes, there's tons of different products out there that that you know whether it cleans the air or ionizes the air or filters the air or whatever it is that it does humidifiers, the air, that they all do something different to say for that. Again, that lady at the If you're just now joining I I talked about a girl that said well if you install our product you don't need these other products that it eliminates the need for those. uh it's it's just not true they're they're accomplishing different tasks if you will and depending on your home depending on your situation, that is, uh, rarely going to be the case for you to be able to say that um, got employees calling me. Um, so that's the main thing I would just convey. The main thing I would say is if you have you know issues in your house in one way, shape or form, Understand that if you have someone with breathing issues or don't if you don't have someone in your house with breathing issues, it does not mean that you're just completely in the clear. In a lot of cases it means that you know you just don't have to be quite as, uh, aggressive. Maybe you know you don't have someone with asthma and their life's on the line tomorrow if you don't do something about this. Um, but it does mean that if depending on your house depending your situation you may have to install a couple different products to you know to reach that goal you know I have customers That'll say to me. Well if I was just if you were just going to install one or two what would be the bare minimum and you know the again that answer might be different depending on what house. I Can tell you that me personally in my house I do have an ionizer in my downstairs system I've got a UV light and I've got a whole house home filter. um I don't have a Murph 16. I have a Merv 13 in there? um so you know is that bare minimum? probably? you know I could I could get even crazier I could you know do a HEPA filter or whatever? but um, you know I I'm I got something. It's better than nothing I guess is the point? Um anyway I'm gonna give y'all another minute or two. I usually get a question or two when we do lives um and I'll give you guys another moment to put something in there if you have something but appreciate you guys watching. I uh I said it on a live we did a couple weeks ago I'm gonna try to do these more often. I'm gonna try to maybe every Friday might move to Sundays I'm not sure yet. Friday seemed to work well for me um and just kind of get on here and do a live and share. You know something that sometimes I can't do a video on certain topics because it's you know there's a number of reasons but it it. it gives me a chance to get on here and share something that I think is important and also take a few questions if I get um you know folks that have a heating and air question that they want to ask um the video that I'm gonna do coming up uh that I was going to do today until this all happened uh is going to be more about uh folks, that or heating and air Pros that misdiagnose uh parts and the reason I want to do a topic on it is a lot. In a lot of cases they are misdiagnosing it, they still replace it and because they replaced it they fixed the issue. So they in their mind think they did a good service for the customer when in reality they probably wasted the customers money they probably. and I'll give you a good example of that. I did a video years ago and I've had a lot of feedback on it. Uh, where other heating and air guys have even told me that I'm just simply wrong that I don't know what I'm talking about and in reality it's in my opinion if they haven't run into this issue, it's because they're misdiagnosing thermostats and the the whole hey I'm gonna I'm gonna Stir It Up again. Uh, the whole issue is that there that some thermostats and in fact I would even go so far to say I don't want to say the majority but a lot of thermostats um most Honeywell thermostats operate this way and that is if they have batteries in them, even if they're hardwired. if they, uh Patricia yes, I'm gonna I'm gonna be posting this: um after we get off of the live that you'll be able to watch it. but uh anyway, the thermostat if you if the batteries Get Low Now I know what people are thinking. Well, the batteries are just back up. They're not just backup if you put batteries in the thermostat, that thermostat I don't care if it's hardwired, it's going to run off of those batteries. Um, so if if they, uh, if the batteries start to get low heating and air guys will say well, uh, it's gonna automatically flip over to the hard wire and so what you're saying makes no sense. What is true is when those batteries start to get low, there are times when it will start to malfunction. So low batteries in a thermostat, even though it's hardwired will start to malfunction. and you've got heating and air guys that will come into a customer's house and say your thermostat is going bad. it's sporadically working. They'll replace the thermostat with fresh batteries or no batteries if it's hardwired. And and they fixed it in their mind, they fixed it. And so that's just one example. I've got about five or six examples I can roll out I did one. Uh, I Did a video just maybe a year ago now, not even where I recorded me talking to the heating and air company because a friend of mine had called out a heating and air company, they misdiagnosed a problem they said I want to say they said that the TXV was the issue or the reversing valve was the issue and I pressed them on it. you know, did you put the system in charging mode? Did you check refrigerant levels and um they you know they had not I caught the guy you should watch that video If you haven't seen it I don't remember what it's called but it's basically uh, me talking me catching a customer or catching a company in a lie or something like that I don't remember what I called it but I catch this heating and air Guy saying where his boss had said oh yeah, we know how to do that. We know how to put it in charging mode and then come to find out they did not put it in charging mode and come to find out. They sent out a senior technician the next day and he found a refrigerant leak in the coil. Now here's the problem with that. The problem is they ended up finding a leaking coil, They got the coil replace system charge back up and everything is good. The problem is if they would have diagnosed a reversing valve and replace that reversing valve, put refrigerant in that charge it up where it's supposed to be and the system worked well The junior Tech would have said yep I diagnosed it correctly I I got it right and I see your question pal I'll get that in just a second. Um, but they said I you know I he'll say I got it on the first try I diagnosed it right, but in reality what he did was he misdiagnosed it and when they installed the reversing valve and they got the system charged back up, it looks like he diagnosed it right because the system works fine for another three to six months until it runs out of refrigerant again. And so the point is, I'm going to do a video. We're going to talk about some of these things where these guys are doing homeowners a disservice. They're misdiagnosing things and that no one ever catches it because um, you know it works when they're done, you know it. it started where it worked well when I'm done. So I must have diagnosed it right. Circuit boards are another one guys will just automatically say oh, that board is bad and they never actually find out if that board actually is bad. We're going to talk about that in an upcoming live uh video and unfortunately, some of these things. Some of these things: As a homeowner, you can protect yourself, but some of these things I don't know how you're going to protect yourself other than um, watch my video and and try to, you know, alleviate some of these issues. But or get a second opinion, you know, if you get a company that says you know this is what's wrong, you know, even if you have to pay for it, maybe get a second opinion before you spend all this money on on it. My AC company installed a bypass HEPA filter. They put it on the side of the air handler but it started pulling moisture in. So now they're replacing my entire air handler. Where is the ideal? Where is the ideal install? Um I guess it would depend on uh, what exactly you're talking about a bypass HEPA filter I've got a a cup I've got a vet office that we take care of that has uh HEPA filters that I believe is probably what you're talking about. where it, um, the duct work from the return side Runs Through It and it and then over to the supply side. So as the system turns on, it pushes air through there, you know and that's how it's kind of filtering it through there. So I guess that is what you're talking about. um I think the answer to your question is uh I would I would want to see the instructions? what do the instructions say it should be installed on? I Can tell you that that sounds odd if the air handler didn't have an issue before and they installed this unit and it started pulling moisture in. So I I'm yeah, it's very interesting. I Don't know if you're saying that it's pulling moisture in from the attic or the crawl space or what where. but if it didn't have an issue before, if the air handler was fine, uh, you know that that's in just an odd situation. um I would go by the instructions and I would also. um, you know? Well, yeah. I would go by the instructions I would install that filter where it says the instructions say to I You would be surprised how many heating and air guys have you ever seen those uh, those funny pictures where the husband gets all the Christmas toys for the kids and he won't read the instructions so he ends up with these. you know, Frankenstein looking toys. Um, a lot of heating and air guys are the same way. I mean when I hire guys and even to this day I plead with them to read the instructions. Uh, because so many guys don't, so many guys, you know they'll be like, ah, it's just a humidifier. I'll just slap it in like any other humidifier and then you pull out the instructions and you read this. This humidifiers, unlike any other humidifier, the wiring must be wired in with the heating only or or whatever. you know, whatever it says, um, you know it's just funny to me. Uh, read the instructions. I don't care how good you think you are, uh, you're not, you're not that good. Read the instructions. So all right. Uh, if no other questions, come in man. I I I I Am going to do that video coming up where we're gonna share some of those things that are misdiagnosed a lot in the heating and air industry where they are taking advantage of homeowners and not even realizing it. in some cases where they they diagnosed it and they diagnosed it wrong and then they um, you know thought that they got it right because they worked fine. When they were done, you know it's it's it's and it's going to get worse. As these new technologies come out, you know it's going to get worse. Uh, what's your opinion on polarized media? and and versus an ionizer? I am a tech? Oh I like ionizers? Uh, we touched on those just a second ago. Um I My biggest issue with a lot of filters. So you know I'm not sure which Media or which filter you're talking about with the polarized media. Um, but a lot of filters. The guy that I learned under hated hated electronic air filters and guess what? I do too. He passed that down to me. Um Premiere one um don't sign off. Boy who had a tiger. don't sign off I'm gonna answer your question but don't sign off I got something else I'm gonna hit you with in just a second. Um, but electrostatic air filters. Uh, you know, polarized media. All these different types of filtration out there. My biggest issue with them is people don't take care of anything homeowners don't take. They don't have their stuff maintained like they should. And that was the biggest issue that the guy that I learned under always had: he didn't like electronic air filters. He didn't like electrostatic air filters. You didn't like any of that stuff because most of our customers weren't. They weren't even replacing their disposable air filters, much less cleaning the cells and all that in the electronic air filters. And I just did a video on that a couple months ago and and a bunch of heat and air guys were getting on there telling me how I was wrong. Uh, I don't care how good something is if it's rendered useless within a few months. Uh, I think one of the guys was arguing. Well, that doesn't take away. just because it, it is rendered useless. Uh, doesn't mean that it's not a good product to start with. Well, I don't I don't disagree with that. If it's a good product, it's a good product. The problem is, when homeowners don't take care of it. if they don't, have they filter cleaned like they should. Well, you just sold them. A gigantic investment in some cases. So let's say you charge them a thousand dollars to put this electric electronic air filter in and then they never get it cleaned like they should. Well, you just took their thousand dollars that first for an electronic air cleaner that only worked for a couple months because they're not cleaning it like they should. Maybe they haven't even. Maybe it's not their fault. maybe their homeowner has not been, uh, properly educated, uh, on on how to do it or how or that they should do that. That they should have a a maintenance contract and have that system maintained. And so you're doing your customers a disservice. In my opinion, you're taking their money. That's pretty valid. I See a lot of dirty, polarized filters that should have been changed much earlier, as well as electronic train air cleaners that get disgusting good stuff. Yeah, I Mean that's just my only thing. It's not that they're a bad product, it's just that I like an eye wave because it's almost relatively zero maintenance I Like a UV light because for the most part, they're pretty zero maintenance until that bulb goes out or until it's rendered ineffective. That's another argument that they'll make. They'll say, well, just because the bulb's on it, it's rendered ineffective because that doesn't matter to me. What matters to me is when you install a filtration system of some kind and it's not maintained properly, you sold them a product that is useless in my opinion. I Learned that from the guy I Learned under and so on. But the reason I wanted you to hang on before you signed off a boy who had a tiger I Love your name. um do you actually have a tiger? That's pretty cool. Um, but the reason I wanted you to hang out is I've been trying to locate some heating and air guys that sell things that I don't sell. So if you have a brand that you sell or or a product that you love I am I would love to invite them onto our channel to talk about those things even if I don't agree with you. If you think that train is the best and I don't agree with that, it doesn't mean I want I want you to tell folks why you think train is the best and or Carrier or ream or whoever it is you like uh I get accused all the time people saying well you just play favorites well I do play favorites I have favorites. You know if I like if I like Chevrolet and you like Ford and I'm talking about how great Chevrolets are well I am playing favorites I I like one over the other um so uh, whether you know boy boy, you had a tagger, if that interests you, send me an email.
