If you have your thermostat connected to WiFi you'll be able to get updates from the manufacturer if any come out. I Remember years ago, one of the thermostats that we installed, they came out with an update that you could make the text bigger on the thermostat and if our customers did not have that thermostat connected to Wi-Fi able to receive that update, they weren't able to get that feature.
