Hey everybody welcome to swimuniversity.com. My name is matt javanese and today i'm going to show you how to test your hot tub and it's going to be completely unedited. Okay, the first way to test your hot tub is just to bring a sample to your local hot tub dealer and have them check it. So what you're going to need is just a plain bottle like this open up the cap go in elbow deep upside down.

Flip the bottle up and watch the bubbles come up and fill up the entire bottle. It may take a while. Now here we go put a cap on it, dry it off, get in your car and take it to your nearest hot tub dealer and have them check it for you, it's that simple. The second way is using test strips now.

What i'm going to do is use a pint glass here. Do the same thing i did with the bottle: go in elbow deep turn: it upside down to get a reading from the middle of the hot tub. Put it on the ledge here. If you can see that, with my dry hand, take out a test strip dip it in wait about 15 seconds and then measure it up right there to the back, this one has no chlorine, ph is super low, so is alkalinity, and so is the calcium nope.

The stabilizer looks like we need to add some chemicals. The third way to do it is by using an old-fashioned liquid test kit, like the one you see here, open it up. We have the phenol red which tests for ph and the oto which tests for chlorine. So you got to do, is take the tester here same thing, upside down, elbow deep flip it up.

It's got some measurements on there, so we can get it down where we need it. It's not very stable, we're gon na, add four drops of phenol red and we're going to add. Four drops of the oto comes with these little caps red for red, yellow for yellow, give it a little shake and test it. You can just match up the colors, as you can see with this one says: it's got a little bit of chlorine, but the ph is super low.

So it's time to add some ph up or some alkalinity increaser. So that's it! It's that simple! You can do it three ways: an old-fashioned liquid test kit, the new style test strips which i personally recommend or just take a sample of the water down to your local hot tub dealer and have them check it for you that you'll get the most accurate reading And you'll get more readings, you'll get calcium, hardness, you'll get you know, cyanuric acid, which the test strips have your total and free chlorine. If you use it bromine as well or any type of sanitizer for that matter, uh salt system - i could go on uh and also you know, alkalinity and ph, and things like that. So that's simple: if you have any questions you can visit our website, it's swimuniversity.com and thanks for watching yep helicopter.

Lies. Get some test strips for a couple bucks and do another Google to learn how to read them, if necessary. The idea of grabbing some water and bring it to somewhere is such garbage.

Can I heat my cold water pool without bromine?

Glass on the side of a spa? What could possibly go wrong!

I just replaced my spa motor but the high speed isn’t as powerful as the old motor. I’d say less than half the power
Any idea and what would cause this?
I put black wire on L white on C and red on H
    Thanks

Well done thanks for the video we are getting our first hot tub being delivered this weekend! I want to make sure I know how to keep the water fresh and in the best state as possible.

How often do you test your hot tub water?

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ronnie Rodriguez says:

You forgot the alkalinity and we don't test for chlorine in hot tubs we test for bromines. They are similar ,but react different to the Hot water .

My test strips test for bromine but I use chlorine do I have the wrong ones or will bromine and chlorine test the same on a strip? does that make sense? Also is it dangerous to sit in a hot tub a few times with low pH low calcium low chlorine or can you not get in iat all if those things are happening? Do you just need to fix them soon? I use chlorine crystals but I have a bromine floater is that not a good thing? Thank you if you can answer this that's awesome.

Hi Matt. I want to say your videos are some of the best right now on the hot tub market. You are the only one that speaks with enthusiasm as opposed to everyone else who sounds like they are reading a script or "ummming" us to death. Keep up the good work. Just a few comments: 1) Stabilizer is a pool parameter ( protects against sanitizer loss from the sun's UV rays, no sun in a hot tub with a cover ) and is not a factor in hot tubs. You are using pool and spa test strips but when you test a hot tub you should ignore the stabilizer at the bottom ( confuses people all the time). The manufacture AquaCheck should make it more clear, the writing on the bottle is so small, most people can't read it. 2) When you did the drops it is advised that the dropper is 100% vertical. It doesn't make a lot of difference but the drop does change size when you angle or shake the reagent drops. This is probably being nit picky but hey, that is the most accurate way to test.
Keep up the good work! 20,000 views in the hot tub or pool industry is a lot for YouTube.
PS Are you in the industry or are you a consumer that just really knows his stuff? Service area Orleans??
