In this video, we took a clip from our live show on Tuesday nights where Joshua Griffin shares how some HVAC contractors are pushing back on newer technologies in the industry. Homeowners' options become limited when contractors in their area do not want to offer a particular product or technology for one reason or another. These contractors are pushing back against electrification and other technologies, which creates a bottleneck in the industry, because no matter if the manufacturer provides the product and the homeowner wants the product, if no one is willing to install it, that becomes a problem for the end, consumer.

Thought I would start tonight's show out with an interesting story. I Found it's on a website called The Energy Mix and it starts out reluctant us car dealers and HVAC installers could slow electrification. There's this push right now. There's this push in our country and not just our country, but in a lot of countries for electrification and some consumers are pushing back.

Some of you may be pushing back. you don't want to drive an electric car. Maybe you like your gas car or truck. You also might like your oil or gas heat and you don't want to make this switch to electrification.

And so I Thought this story was interesting because it pointed out not just that consumers are part of this, but the HVAC installers themselves are a part of this, right? So if you can't find a heating and air company or installer to install the product that you want, then that really lessens your options as a consumer. I Help folks on our website new Hbac Guide.com and where we help people through the process of you know, buying a heating and air system, helping them try to avoid some of the problems that homeowners face when they're going through that process and trying to help them through that and educating them and so on. One of the things that we'll run into sometimes is I'll have customers on that website say I Can't find anybody in my area that will sell a particular brand or a particular product. So if they've got, let's say 20 companies in their area and none of those companies want to do what they want none of those companies want to install a heat pump for example, then that customer can't have a heat pump.

You know, unless they want to have it installed by somebody that doesn't know what they're doing or try to install it themselves, There's some DIY options out there. And then of course, that brings on a whole set of problems, right? So getting back to our story here it reads: even as Us consumers increasingly Embrace electric vehicles and heat pumps supply chain bottlenecks may arise from established networks of fossil car dealers and HVAC installers who are still heavily invested in Legacy Technologies We've ran into that here on our YouTube channel We've had guys say hey, I don't want to sell High Seer heat pump systems inverter systems I'm going to sell what I want to sell You know I don't care what the consumer wants or what the industry is going towards I think I know my customers better than the manufacturers or the government I know my customers better than them I've done the math and the math just doesn't work. That's what some of them will say they are. As this articles just said, heavily invested in those Legacy Technologies The concern emerging in the the US may actually point to a difference between the US and Canadian markets.

Over the weekend, Clean Energy Canada reported that EV demand is still surging and supplies are still insufficient in Canada. So Wow! so that points out another point when we in the US are looking at how other countries are moving towards, say, electric vehicles and they're having issues making that switch. That's might be something that plays a role in this as well. I Don't really care about the car side of this article I I Thought it was more interesting the HVAC side of this.
here we go: Heat pump uptake also risks being slowed by an quote incumbent. Network Unquote: pushing back against new technology American Households bought more heat pumps than gas furnaces for the first time ever last year, but heating, ventilation and air conditioning contractors reluctance to learn the installation guideline could slow things down. So what are your thoughts on this guys as we go through this article: What are your thoughts? Have you run into this? Have you seen some contractors saying hey, I I Don't care where the industry is heading I Don't care that you want this newer technology? I'm not going to sell it. Have you run into that? I'm very curious.

Quote: Contractors may not be familiar with the latest options. They may have existing sales Channel relationships limiting their access to the latest and greatest and they fear bad reviews. Unquote writes Bloomberg Recognizing the urgent need for installer education, the US Department of Energy is now heavily involved in the training, established and upcoming HVAC Professionals on Heat pump Technology, assisting in almost 80% of all HVAC training programs in the country. Wow.

I didn't even know, So that's interesting right there that the Doe is assisting in almost 80% of all HVAC training programs ensuring all systems go on EV and heat pump adoption will be critical to reaching Net Zero by 2050 targets Bloomberg Noted of the US $ 1994 trillion in investment will be needed to hit that Target 51% will be spent on these two technologies. So yeah, that just thought that was an interesting article. As as we've talked about in the past, the fact that there are some Heating and Air Guys Whether it's they don't want to make the switch, maybe it's they feel like they know better, Maybe they have done the math and they think that there's no upside to paying the extra money for some of these systems and I Think that that may have been a valid argument in the past, but as time has gone on, we're starting to see more budget friendly inverter systems coming out there. We've done videos on the Dy and Fit and with the some of the re debates that they have in place and some of the other programs and I'm sure there's other systems out there too.

We just as you guys know that's what I sell and a lot of you know anyway, you may not know that they are at times less expensive than installing a single stage system. You can actually spend less money in the end and have a more efficient system in the end. Extremely quieter. Extremely.

Lots of things.

The lack of good contractors for Bosch in my area caused me to drop all the inverters from my list.

My short list was Trane or Rheem two stage heat pump, and Bosch inverter. This was based on factors like demand defrost, two stage aux electric heat, efficiency, compatibility with existing zone controls, compatibility with Honeywell Prestige thermostats and cost.

I have two good Rheem contractors in my area and two Trane. I had no luck finding a Bosch dealer in my area that I trusted.

There are professionals and those who call themselves professionals. Those businesses that are not willing to educate themselves on the latest technology fall into the later group. My grandfather was an engineer. He told me about the time, in history, when the automobile bgan to relace the horse and buggy in significant numbers. It was perceived by many as a crisis. Seen many horse and buggies on your daily commute these days. Unless you live in Amish country. Service area Ottawa??

"Done the math", third grade level math only takes you so far.

I grew up when there was TV repair shops. Many shops had limited expertise and their repairs were pretty much based on vacuum tube changing. When semiconductor transistor-based TV's started to come out they bad mouthed them because it threatened their business.

The day is close to where your HVAC system is tied to internet, and you will get a notice of pending HVAC issue to which a service person will come out with the precise diagnosis and part to fix the issue. At best, the existing HVAC service outfits will be contractors to the equipment manufacturers to provide manufacturer sponsored service support.

Here's my concern about some of the new leading technologies systems. In mid July of 2022 I get a call from a local realtor saying a house she just sold wouldn't cool. She sent me the new owners name and address, we setup a time that afternoon to take a look. I get there and it was a 6 year old Trane communicating heat pump with an inverter drive. I kept getting codes indicating a problem with the inverter drive so I call Trane tech support. They say the drive and compressor are both bad, and the system is out of warranty because the property changed owners. I get that. Then I asked them about getting a new drive and compressor. They said at the soonest it would be to get the drive was mid to late September if we're lucky since there are no drives available in North America. They apparently come from Taiwan according to tech support. They advise that the wholesale price for said drive and compressor is over $4K, so if you add my markup and labor we're in the $8K range. When I explain all this to the new owner I thought her head was about to spin off. It was 100F+ and she was moving into a $400,000 house with a 6 year old high end AC system that couldn't be fixed!
The question I kept asking myself was had that system saved the previous owners enough to offset the additional cost at time of purchase.
Had this been a garden variety system, we could have easily had her up and running the next day by noon.
I have a 10 year old 15 SEER non communicating heat pump system that I've never serviced except for rinsing off the heat pump and changing the filters. It has PSC motors! Are you in Kanata ?

Still running a 26 year old Goodman heat pump in Northern Kentucky. 2 1/2 ton unit on a 1978 built, 1400 sf, crawl space home. Only challenge for it is when it’s COLD or very high humidity (snowing or freezing rain when it is around 32 degrees. Yes, we must use heat strips and supplemental LP gas heat on those days. In 2022 our total expenses for heating and cooling and all other home utilities was $1607 @ 70 degree thermostat setting.
I am concerned about making the switch to the new high efficiency heat pumps now required in Kentucky. Seems like there are more repairs on these newer units — one service trip could destroy most of your yearly savings. PS. I’ve had to replace two relays on the air handler, but the only maintenance on the outside unit has been a regular “bath”. 😀.

Lol, trying to get a Variable Speed or Inverter System for 3 years! Most installer don't have a clue – they are currently going from 1 stage to 2 stage… My 24 year old unit has that. It's old news..

I just bought my own heat pump and installed it. It's not rocket science. I skipped the installers. I tried to enlist them, but they were pretty much dumb on the tech. I just did it myself. Not too hard. $300 bucks to get your refrigerant license. $5k installed, quoted $15k. haha. (16 seer communicating system)

I think that the on the electrification on cars and HVAC needs to be not forced on the consumers by the government. First I rather drive a gas car and have a gas furnace. When the power goes out in the winter I can still stay warm. Gas cars can go further. Make older houses like mine more efficient by new windows and adding insulation in the walls would help keep it at a better more comfortable with my older systems. Make it more affordable to make older homes more efficient without taking out a loan.

Most HVAC companies in my area don't install Heat Pumps. I am interested in learning more about them for my area. Are you in Nepean ?

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars miapapa1955 says:

I had a 3 ton heat pump installed, Very happy, works great, plus I get a 2,000 tax rebate. I had close to ten contractors come out and give me estimates, only one mention the rebate.

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Rigo says:

I went from a gas furnace to a heat pump and its been fine. But I also live in Florida where we have mild winters. Its a matter of time contractors that won't do new tech will be out of a job and/or out of business. I've had two inverter systems and I'll probably never go to single stage system.

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Robert Moran says:

A lot of AC companies in my area will not install inverter systems.

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John White says:

Many installers in my area won’t install communicating systems because they refuse to read manuals or learn how to install them.I have litttle sympathy for anyone who holds themselves out as😢 a professional and charges professional prices who feels they don’t have to learn new things . It’s too hard to install, too hard troubleshoot, and too easy to do a quick dump and pump install on. Single or dual stage system where you don’t have to weight charges in, sweat properly etc. Yes , Full inverter communicating system require you to have a brain and care about what you are doing , your clients and their comfort and actually the long term residual business of your business. I understand brand affinity, esp when it comes to local distributer. I. Sorry if you have to weight in your charge carefully, and top off every year carefully-but just because simpler systems allow for sloppier work or less well trained attentive employees I can’t respect. Maybe if more HVAC firms took a different attitude they might see clients TRUST them enough to sign on for maintainence, agreement, where and annual is kept ion actually DOES something- e.g., how many firms actually fully clean both the inside and outside coils? Test refrigerant levels, ensure all major electrical connections are secure?

Lemmings are Stupid. And will go off a Clif. Don't give up options to keep fossil fuels and Heat pump , along with Propane fuels. Along with wood heating. All is good Insurance.
